Chapter 8 - A New FoundationThree weeks later, the sun shone brightly over Lakehurst, Illinois.

The Moretti estate looked entirely different. The armed guards at the gate were gone, replaced by private security details, and the grim atmosphere of a criminal stronghold had been replaced by the sound of fresh paint being rolled onto the walls.

In the newly renovated garden patio, Julian sat in a comfortable armchair—not a wheelchair. With the help of Dr. Bennett and sheer iron will, he was learning to walk again with titanium-reinforced leg braces.

Claire sat across from him, a light bandage still visible on her shoulder, pouring fresh lemonade into two glasses.

On the lawn nearby, Ellie was busy teaching Arthur Bell how to properly construct a mud pie, complete with daisy decorations.

"The federal prosecutors wrapped up their case this morning," Julian said quietly, handing Claire a glass. "Marcus Vance and his conspirators will spend the rest of their natural lives behind bars. The Moretti name is officially clean... and retired from the underworld."

Claire took a sip of the lemonade, looking out over the sprawling estate. "And what about you, Mr. Moretti?" Julian raised an eyebrow. "Julian," he corrected gently. "And as for me... my empire is right here."

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a slightly crushed, slightly sticky sugar cookie, holding it out across the table.

Claire laughed, a bright, genuine sound that chased away the last of the shadows. She took the cookie, broke it in half, and handed him a piece.

"Well," Claire smiled, her eyes meeting his with a warmth that needed no words. "Since you're finally eating your sugar when you're grumpy, I suppose I can stay."

Julian took a bite, looking over at Ellie laughing on the lawn, and for the first time in his life, he knew he was exactly where he belonged.
