Chapter 3 - The Matriarch's Shadow

"Your Honor, this is a fabrication!" Sterling scrambled, sweat now visible on his forehead. "There is no proof of the validity of this document—"

"It is on my mother’s watermarked stationery," Julian muttered under his breath, his composure entirely shattering. He glared at his mother. "Mother... what did you do?"

Victoria didn't answer. She turned on her heel and walked out of the courtroom, the double doors swinging shut behind her.

"Your Honor," Arthur Hartwell said, stepping forward with absolute authority. "The defense has built its entire case for a quick, zero-asset divorce on a postnuptial agreement that we can now prove was fraudulently obtained while my client was incapacitated. This is not just a civil matter anymore. This is criminal fraud, forgery, and grand larceny."

The judge banged his gavel. "In light of this evidence, this court is suspending the divorce proceedings pending a full forensic audit of the postnuptial agreement and an investigation into Mrs. Victoria Vance and notary Marcus Vance. Mr. Vance, your passport is to be surrendered immediately. You are ordered to pay temporary spousal support of fifteen thousand dollars a month, effective today, and you are barred from coming within five hundred feet of the petitioner and her child."

"Fifteen thousand?!" Julian gasped. "Your Honor, that's absurd! I'm in the middle of a merger!"

"Then I suggest you settle your legal troubles quickly, Mr. Vance," the judge said coldly. "Court is adjourned."

As the room cleared, Julian stood frozen at his table.

Sabrina Cole looked at him, her eyes flashing with a sudden, vicious realization. She wasn't just his mistress; she was a woman who had invested her own family's capital into Julian's upcoming business merger. If Julian was ruined, she was ruined.

"You lied to me," Sabrina whispered, her voice dripping with venom. "You told me everything was clean. You told me your mother had it handled."

"Sabrina, wait, let me explain—"

"Don't touch me," Sabrina said, stepping back. She turned her gaze to Clarabel, who was gently rocking her baby, a look of quiet, triumphant peace on her face. "You think you've won, Clarabel? Victoria Vance doesn't lose. She will burn this whole city down before she lets you take a single dime of her money."

"Let her try," Clarabel said softly. "I'm not the scared girl she brought into her house anymore."
