Chapter 4 - The Backlash

Within forty-eight hours, the story broke.
“VANCE FAMILY EMPIRE SHAKEN: Matriarch Accused of Forging Postnup in ICU to Rob Daughter-in-Law.”
The headlines flooded social media. Photos of Clarabel walking out of the courthouse with her baby against her chest, contrasting with photos of Julian and Sabrina looking panicked, went viral. The public outrage was immediate. Activists, mothers' rights groups, and financial watchdogs demanded justice for Clarabel.
Julian’s business partners began pulling out of the merger. The Vance Group’s stock plummeted by fifteen percent in a single day.
Clarabel sat in her mother’s small, cramped kitchen, watching the news play out on a small television. Her phone was buzzing constantly with interview requests, but she ignored them. She was focusing on the baby, who was finally sleeping soundly without the stress of her mother's anxiety radiating through her milk.
A heavy knock on the front door shattered the quiet.
Clarabel’s mother, Sarah, went to open it, but Clarabel stopped her. "I'll get it, Mom."
She opened the door to find Sabrina Cole standing on the porch. Gone was the pristine linen suit and the perfect hair. Sabrina looked disheveled, her eyes bloodshot, wearing dark sunglasses and a simple trench coat.
"We need to talk," Sabrina said, her voice frantic.
"I have nothing to say to you," Clarabel said, starting to close the door.
"It's about Julian and his mother," Sabrina blurted out, placing her hand on the door. "They're going to frame you, Clarabel. Victoria is planning to claim that you stole the fifty thousand dollars from her estate and that the grandmother was the one who forged the letter to blackmail them. They have the police in their pocket. If you don't listen to me, they will arrest you by tomorrow morning."

Clarabel stared at her. "Why are you telling me this? You hate me."
"I hate losing," Sabrina said, pulling off her sunglasses. "Julian ruined my family's firm. He used our merger money to cover his mother's bad debts. I don't want him anymore, Clarabel. I want him destroyed. And you are the only one who can do it."
