Chapter 8 - The Seventy Candles

The night of Valyria Varlli’s seventieth birthday arrived like a royal coronation. The grand ballroom of the Varlli estate blazed with crystal chandeliers, white roses, and the quiet hum of violin music. One hundred elite guests—politicians, judges, foreign dignitaries, and carefully vetted syndicate bosses—stood in respectful silence as the double doors swung open.

Dante Varlli entered first. But he was not alone.

On his arm walked Lena. She wore an emerald-green velvet gown that trailed behind her like liquid emerald, her hair swept up with diamond pins, her head held high with the undeniable, lethal elegance of a queen who ruled the darkness alongside her king.

At the head table, sitting in a stately velvet armchair beneath a canopy of white orchids, sat Valyria Varlli. Her silver hair was piled high, her face lined with age and grace, her dark eyes sharp and alive with triumph.

Dante walked Lena straight to the center table, pulled out her chair, and seated her with the reverence of a devotee. Then, he stood beside her, his hand resting securely on the small of her back.

Valyria looked across the table, her gaze moving from Dante to Lena, and then—for the first time in thirty-eight years—to the empty chair beside her.

Except the chair was no longer empty.

Valyria reached out, her frail hand covering Lena’s fingers resting on the tablecloth. A slow, radiant smile broke across the old woman’s face, filling the room with a sudden, overwhelming warmth.

"You found her," Valyria whispered, her voice carrying clearly across the silent hall.

"I didn't find her, Mama," Dante said, looking down at Lena with a fierce, burning adoration that completely stripped away the mafia boss, leaving only a man who had finally come home. "She found me."

The room erupted into applause, but Lena heard none of it. She only felt Dante’s arm tighten around her waist, anchoring her forever in the eye of the storm.
