Chapter 9 - The Final Ledger

Three months after the birthday gala, the Varlli Legacy Trust held its annual autumn vote in a secure penthouse overlooking the Manhattan skyline. The trustees sat in silence as the new portfolio projections were laid out before them.
Shipping revenues were up eighteen percent. Real estate holdings had expanded without a single federal inquiry. And the family syndicate had quietly transitioned into a legitimate global logistics enterprise, protected by an ironclad legal and financial network managed exclusively by one person.
Lena sat at the head of the long glass table, wearing a sharp charcoal blazer, her wedding ring catching the morning light as she signed the final audit report.
Dante stood behind her chair, his hands resting on her shoulders, casually thumbing through the margin notes.
"You're bleeding the Boston shipping lanes dry," Dante murmured into her ear, a low rumble of amusement in his chest.
"I'm optimizing our assets," Lena replied without looking up, signing her name with a flourish. "Your uncles were getting lazy."
"They're terrified of you."
"Good." Lena closed the leather binder, turned in her chair, and looked up at her husband. "Fear keeps people honest, Dante. You should try it more often."

Dante chuckled, leaning down to press a warm, deliberate kiss against her lips right in front of the assembled trustees, who immediately averted their eyes in respectful, unbroken submission.
"Come home, Mrs. Varlli," Dante whispered against her mouth. "The table is set."
