Chapter 2 - THE PAPERWORK OF REVENGEThe night dragged on like a slow-burning fuse. By 2:00 AM, the mansion was eerie in its silence. Vanessa was fast asleep in the master bedroom, operating under the arrogant assumption that she held all the cards.

She couldn't have been more wrong.

While the children slept peacefully under the care of Michael’s trusted personal bodyguard, Julian, and a private medical team brought in secretly through the back gates, Michael sat in his subterranean office with his head attorney, Marcus Vance.

"The physical evidence is damning, Michael," Marcus said, laying out high-resolution photographs of Ethan and Lily’s injuries taken by the private physician. "We have the medical report confirming repeated physical trauma over at least six months. But legally, if she fights this in family court, she can drag the process through the mud for years. She’ll use media leaks to damage Carter Global's stock value to force a payout."

"I don't care about the stock value, Marcus," Michael said, his hand wrapped around a glass of neat bourbon he hadn't touched. "I want her stripped of every cent. I want her ruined so completely that she can't even afford a public defender."

Marcus pulled a manila folder from his leather briefcase and slid it across the glass desk. "Then you're going to like what my investigators dug up three hours ago."

Michael opened the file. Inside were bank statements, wire transfers, and shell company registries linked to accounts in the Cayman Islands.

"What is this?"

"Vanessa didn't just marry you for status, Michael," Marcus explained, leaning forward. "She owes twelve million dollars to a high-stakes gambling syndicate in Macau. Before she met you, she was heavily involved in offshore credit fraud. She’s been systematically transferring small amounts from your secondary holding accounts into a company called Aegis Holdings—a company registered under her maiden name."

Michael eyes narrowed. "She was stealing from me before she even put a finger on my kids?"

"Over three million dollars in eight months," Marcus nodded. "She was planning to drain your liquid reserves and file for a high-conflict divorce next year."

A cold smile broke across Michael’s face. "She thinks she holds my children hostage with a prenuptial agreement?"

"The prenup has a strict morality clause," Marcus smiled viciously. "Any act of grand larceny, fraud, or child endangerment forfeits all spousal support, property rights, and legal representation covered by your estate. We don't just divorce her, Michael. We liquidate her."

"Not yet," Michael said, setting his glass down. "If we arrest her now, her legal team will post bail, and her syndicate backers might try to extract her from the country. I want to trap her in her own game."

"What’s the move?"

Michael stood up, walking toward the grand floor-to-ceiling window overlooking the dark estate gardens. "Tomorrow night is the Annual Carter Foundation Gala. The mayor, the district attorney, every major news network, and the elite of the financial world will be there. Vanessa has spent six months planning it. She calls it her 'coming out party' as the first lady of Boston high society."

Marcus raised an eyebrow. "You want to confront her there?"

"Confront her?" Michael turned, his face illuminated by the faint moonlight. "No. I’m going to let her walk onto that stage, bask in the spotlight she traded her soul for... and then I'm going to pull the rug out from under her in front of every camera in the city."

At 6:00 AM, Michael walked upstairs. He changed into a fresh suit and knocked gently on the master bedroom door.

Vanessa opened it, wearing a silk robe, a mask of cold disdain on her face. "Back to apologize? I hope you’ve realized that calling the cops will cost you more than it costs me, Michael."

Michael forced his expression into one of drained, broken surrender. He looked down at the floor, acting like a defeated man.

"You win, Vanessa," he said, his voice trembling convincingly. "Just... don't touch the children again. We’ll talk to the lawyers after the Gala tomorrow night. I won't ruin your big night."

Vanessa stared at him, her eyes searching his face. Seeing his slumping shoulders and weary eyes, a triumphant smirk spread across her lips.

"Good boy," she purred, brushing past him. "I knew you’d see reason. Make sure the kids stay out of my sight today. They have dirt on their clothes and it disgusts me."

As she walked down the hall toward the spa room, Michael slowly raised his head. The defeat in his eyes vanished, replaced by an absolute, terrifying stillness.

"Enjoy the high life while it lasts, Vanessa," he whispered to the empty hallway. "Because tomorrow, you fall."
