Chapter 4 - THE CELL BLOCK DANCEThe click of the handcuffs around Vanessa’s wrists was caught on fifty different media cameras. The images were plastered across every major news portal, trending #1 worldwide within two hours: "BILLIONAIRE’S WIFE ARRESTED AT CHARITY GALA FOR CHILD ABUSE AND FRAUD."

By midnight, Vanessa was sitting in a cold, fluorescent-lit interrogation cell at the precinct. Her expensive emerald gown was crumpled, her makeup smeared with sweat and tears.

Her high-powered defense attorney, Richard Sterling—whom she had managed to call using her one phone call—sat beside her, looking through a stack of documents with an increasingly grim expression.

"Get me out of here, Richard!" Vanessa hissed, banging her manicured nails on the metal table. "Bail me out! I can't stay in this disgusting place!"

Sterling let out a tired sigh and closed his folder. "There is no bail, Vanessa."

"What do you mean there's no bail?!"

"The prosecution presented the audio-visual evidence to Judge Reynolds half an hour ago. Given your flight risk status, your offshore accounts, and the severity of the felony child endangerment charges, you are being held without bail until arraignment."

Vanessa’s eyes widened in horror. "Then use Michael’s money! Pay the judge! Do something!"

"Michael has completely frozen all joint accounts under the emergency fraud protocol of your prenuptial agreement," Sterling said coldly. "In fact, I am here to inform you that I am withdrawing as your counsel."

Vanessa slammed her hands on the table. "You can't do that! I hired you!"

"You hired me with a retainer check drawn from a Carter Global secondary account," Sterling replied, standing up and buttoning his suit jacket. "That check just bounced. You have no money, Vanessa. You are broke. The state will assign you a public defender."

"Richard, wait! You can't leave me!" she screamed as the door opened.

Standing in the doorway wasn't just the guard. It was Michael.

He stepped inside, nodding to the guard, who closed the door behind him, leaving Michael standing across the metal table from his broken wife.

Vanessa’s panic instantly shifted back into venomous hatred. "You think you’ve won, don't you? You think you can just destroy me and go back to your perfect little life?"

Michael pulled out a chair and sat down slowly. He looked completely untroubled, his suit impeccable, his eyes calm.

"My life will never be 'perfect', Vanessa," Michael said. "My children are in therapy. They flinch when someone walks too fast past them. You broke their trust in adults. That is something I have to fix every day for the rest of my life."

"They're weak!" she spat. "Just like you!"

Michael smiled—a cold, terrifying smile that made Vanessa shiver despite the warm room.

"You don't get it, do you?" Michael whispered. "You thought you were playing chess with a grieving widower. But you forgot who built the board."

He pulled a single sheet of paper from his coat pocket and slid it across the table.

"What is this?" she snapped.

"That is a transfer agreement for your family's ancestral property in upstate New York," Michael said. "The house where your mother lives."

Vanessa froze. "What did you do to my mother?"

"Nothing," Michael said smoothly. "Her house was mortgaged through a secondary lender six years ago. A lender that was just acquired by my venture capital firm two hours ago. You stole from my children, Vanessa. So I bought your family's debt. If you don't plead guilty to all charges tomorrow morning and sign a full waiver relinquishing any right to appeal, I will foreclose on your mother’s home by noon. She’ll be on the street."

Vanessa’s lips trembled. The cold, manipulative socialite was gone. In her place was a trapped predator who had run out of ground.

"You're a monster," she whimpered.

"No," Michael leaned in, his voice dropping to a icy murmur. "I'm a father. And you touched my kids."
