Chapter 1 - The Weight of SilenceLocked inside the cramped supply room, Leah pressed her ear against the cool wood of the door. Her breath hitched in her throat. Outside, the low, steady murmur of her husband Nathan’s voice mixed with Doreen’s sharp, commanding tones.

“The legal paperwork is already drafted,” Doreen said, her voice dripping with absolute authority. “Dr. Rusk signed off on the psychiatric evaluation this morning. Once the hospital administration processes the transfer, the infant is legally under our custody. Leah is in no fit state to raise a child.”

Nathan hesitated. Leah waited, praying, gripping the edge of the bassinet until her knuckles turned white. Say something, she begged silently. Tell her no. Tell her this is our son.

“Are you sure this is necessary, Mom?” Nathan finally asked, his voice weak, riddled with convenience rather than conviction. “She hasn’t done anything violent. She just... gets anxious.”

“Anxiety is a symptom of severe postpartum psychosis, Nathan,” Doreen replied smoothly, leaving zero room for argument. “You want what’s best for your son, don’t you? A stable home. Not a mother who hallucinates dark rivers and drowning children. Sign the papers, and let us handle the rest.”

Inside the room, a tear slipped down Leah’s cheek, hot and furious. They hadn’t just planned this today. This was a trap months in the making—from the private clinic Doreen handpicked, to the unnecessary hospital admission, to the carefully engineered isolation. They wanted her child, and they were using the medical system as a weapon to steal him.

Nurse Mae stepped back from the door, her face a mask of fierce determination. She grabbed a spare lab coat from a hook, shoved it into Leah’s hands, and pointed toward a metal service ladder tucked behind a stack of linen boxes.

“Listen to me closely, Leah,” Mae whispered fiercely, her eyes burning with intensity. “That service ladder leads straight to the laundry loading dock in the basement. There’s a delivery van idling outside right now. If you stay here ten more minutes, you and this baby will vanish into their system forever. Run.”
