Chapter 4 - A DANGEROUS ALLIANCE

By Monday morning, the atmosphere on the fortieth floor had fundamentally shifted.

The employees whispered among themselves, casting sideways glances at Chloe as she stepped out of the express elevator wearing a crisp new blazer, sensible flat shoes, and an expression of grim determination.

She walked past Matteo’s desk without flinching, dropped a stack of audited reports onto his keyboard, and marched straight into Lorenzo’s office without knocking.

Lorenzo looked up from his black stone desk. He wasn't working on shipping contracts; he was reviewing a dossier marked with a red stamp: GIOVANNI MORETTI.

“Knocking is customary, Miss Bennett,” Lorenzo said, though there was no heat in his voice.

“Knocking is for people who don't have a mountain of unredacted tax evasion documents to review before lunch,” Chloe shot back, dropping a heavy manila folder right on top of his dossier. “Victor Vance wasn't acting alone. He was a middleman. The money he was siphoning wasn't going to a Cayman account—it was being funneled directly to Giovanni Moretti on the North Side.”

Lorenzo’s posture stiffened. The name hung in the air like ozone before a thunderstorm. Moretti was his primary rival, a ruthless syndicate boss looking to expand his territory into downtown Chicago.

“How do you know that?” Lorenzo asked, his dark eyes narrowing.

“Because Victor’s shell company shared an IP address with a logistics firm owned by Moretti’s brother,” Chloe said, pulling out a red pen and slamming it down on the desk. “And because I cross-referenced the routing numbers with municipal property taxes from three years ago. Moretti is buying up the warehouses surrounding your shipping docks. He’s planning a hostile takeover—and by hostile, I mean he’s going to burn your inventory to the ground.”

Lorenzo stared at the folder, then up at Chloe. The clumsy girl from the train station, the disaster who had dumped a granola bar on his desk, was systematically dismantling his biggest enemy's supply chain using public records and corporate accounting.

“You have a terrifying mind, Chloe Bennett,” Lorenzo said quietly.

“And you have terrible security,” she replied without missing a beat. “Which is why I’ve rewritten your company’s internal controls. Effective immediately, no one moves a dollar without my sign-off. Not even you.”

Lorenzo let out a short, sharp bark of laughter—a sound so rare that Matteo poked his head through the doorway just to check if the roof was leaking.

“You’re telling me that a woman who tripped over her own feet during her interview is now running my financial empire?” Lorenzo asked, leaning forward, resting his chin on his hands.

“I’m telling you that if you want to keep your empire, you need to let me do my job,” Chloe said, leaning down so her face was level with his, her eyes flashing with absolute defiance. “And you need to sign these compliance forms right now.”

Lorenzo didn't break eye contact. Slowly, deliberately, he picked up a silver fountain pen, pulled the papers closer, and signed his name at the bottom of the page.

“Done,” Lorenzo said softly. “What’s our next move, Boss?”
