Chapter 2 - THE VIPER IN THE SHADOWS

The gunshot echoed like a bomb inside the cramped boiler room. Mateo collapsed heavily onto the concrete floor, eyes wide with shock, blood pooling instantly from a hole in his chest.
Nora gasped, dropping her medical needle, but before she could scream, Damian reacted with terrifying, unnatural speed. Despite his torn shoulder and blood loss, he lunged forward, grabbing Lorenzo’s gun arm and twisting it violent upward.
A second shot blew a hole through the exposed pipes in the ceiling, sending scalding steam roaring into the small room.
"Lorenzo!" Damian snarled, his voice like grinding tectonic plates. "Ten years!"
"Ten years of playing second fiddle to a man who grew soft!" Lorenzo spat back, his face twisted in venomous hatred. He slammed his elbow into Damian’s wounded shoulder.
Damian grunted in agony, his grip slipping. Lorenzo broke free, stepping back to aim the weapon straight at Damian’s head. "Falcone offered me half the city, Damian. You kept us in the shadows, hiding behind real estate and legal fronts. Falcone wants blood, power, and absolute war. And tonight, you die in a gutter with a gutter rat!"
Lorenzo squeezed the trigger.
CLICK.
The chamber was empty. Lorenzo had exhausted his final round during the earlier firefight in the alley and hadn't reloaded.
Before Lorenzo could rack a new magazine, Nora grabbed the heavy iron hot plate from the milk crate and slammed it with all her strength against the side of Lorenzo’s head.
The heavy metal struck his temple with a sickening crack. Lorenzo reeled backward, disoriented, blood gushing from his ear. Damian didn't hesitate. He grabbed his fallen knife from his belt, lunged forward, and drove the blade straight into Lorenzo's throat, pinning the traitor against the brick wall.
Lorenzo gasped for air, his eyes bulging as Damian leaned in close, his face inches away, cold as winter ice.
"The Costa Syndicate doesn't forgive," Damian whispered coldly. He pulled the knife free, and Lorenzo slumped to the floor, lifeless.
Silence fell over the room, save for the hiss of the broken steam pipe and the heavy, ragged gasps of Damian and Nora.
Nora stood trembling, the hot plate slipping from her numb fingers and clattering to the floor. She stared at the two dead men on her floor, her safe haven transformed into an abattoir.
Damian turned to her. Blood was seeping through his freshly stitched wound, but his eyes were sharp, dangerous, and focused entirely on her.
"Your life as you knew it is over," Damian said, stepping toward her. "Falcone’s men know this alley. They will find Lorenzo’s body. They will hunt down anyone connected to this room."
"I... I have nowhere to go," Nora whispered, her voice cracking for the first time. "I have nothing."

Damian reached out, his long, calloused fingers closing around her small, cold hand—just as she had done for him in the alley.
"You have me," Damian said darkly. "And tonight, Chicago burns."
