Chapter 7 - THE ST. JUDE SECRET

By morning, the siege was over. Falcone’s assault force had been completely wiped out, but the victory felt hollow inside the silent, blood-stained mansion.

Damian sat in his private study, surrounded by heavy steel file cabinets. In front of him sat a faded, leather-bound folder retrieved from his father’s deepest vaults—a folder labeled St. Jude’s Trust - Subject 049.

Nora stepped softly into the room. She had changed into a simple sweater and jeans, looking small and fragile against the backdrop of Damian’s brutal world.

"Valeria said you wanted to see me," she said softly. "Damian... what did your uncle mean down at the docks? What was he saying about St. Jude's?"

Damian didn't look up immediately. He opened the file. Inside were dozens of wire transfer receipts, medical records, and a yellowed birth certificate.

"Twenty-three years ago," Damian began, his voice dangerously quiet, "my father was involved in a brutal war for control of the South Side. His primary rival was a man named Victor Vance. My father wiped out Vance’s entire family... or so he thought."

Nora felt the air leave her lungs. "Why are you telling me this?"

Damian stood up, carrying the birth certificate, and walked over to her. He held it out with a trembling hand.

"Victor Vance had a newborn daughter. Before my father burned Vance’s compound to the ground, he found the baby in a crib. My father was a killer, Nora... but he couldn't bring himself to murder an infant. So, he dropped her off at Cook County Hospital under the cover of night, and later had her transferred to St. Jude’s Foster Home."

Nora’s world spun. The room seemed to tilt beneath her feet. "No... no, that’s impossible..."

"My father paid for your shelter, your clothes, your schooling—anonymously—until the day he was assassinated," Damian continued, his eyes burning with intense sorrow. "You were the daughter of his greatest enemy. He kept you hidden from the underworld, and he kept you hidden from me."

Tears streamed down Nora’s pale cheeks. "I’m not an orphan... I was the child of a dead crime lord... kept in a cage by the man who killed my father?"

"Yes," Damian whispered. "And Falcone found out. Falcone didn't just ambush me on Rush Street to kill me—he engineered the location right outside your diner. He knew if I died, he could use your bloodline to claim your father’s old territories!"

Nora stepped back, clutching her head, overwhelmed by the crushing weight of twenty-three years of lies. "My whole life... my suffering, my cold nights in that basement... it was all a lie?"

"Nora, listen to me," Damian stepped toward her, reaching out.

"Don't touch me!" she sobbed, backing away toward the door. "Your family destroyed my life before I even had a chance to live it!"

Before Damian could explain further, the heavy reinforced door of the study was blown off its hinges by a massive breacher charge.
