Chapter 3 - The Trap at Pier 44The rain had turned into a steady, gray mist by 2:00 AM, coating the shipping containers at Pier 44 in a slick sheen of water.

Yuri Rostov stood inside his primary warehouse, a massive, cavernous steel structure filled with crates of smuggled Kentucky bourbon and stacks of duffel bags stuffed with untraceable cash. He was a barrel-chested man with a thick blond beard and cold, dead eyes that had seen too many winters in Siberia.

"What do you mean, they're hitting the south depot?" Yuri barked into his satellite phone, pacing across the concrete floor. "It’s a diversion! Check the front gates!"

Before his man on the other end could answer, the heavy steel roll-up door of the main entrance let out an ear-splitting groan of tearing metal.

CRASH.

A black armored SUV smashed straight through the center of the door, showering sparks and twisted sheet metal across the floor. Before the dust could even settle, four heavily armed men in black tactical gear poured out, their submachine guns sweeping the corners with ruthless precision.

"Drop your weapons!" Paulie Gault roared, stepping out from the passenger side of the SUV like an oncoming freight train.

Yuri’s guards reached for their pistols, but they were dead before their fingers cleared leather. A controlled burst of silenced gunfire echoed through the warehouse, and three Russian enforcers hit the floor, twitching once before going still.

Yuri scrambled backward, his hand frantically grabbing a submachine gun resting on a nearby crate. "You sons of bitches—"

"Drop it, Yuri," a calm, chilling voice cut through the cavernous space.

Yuri froze.

From the shadows near the back office walked Enzo Marchetti. He wasn't holding a gun. He was casually lighting a Tuscan cigar, the orange tip glowing in the dark interior. His suit was freshly pressed, the bloodstains from earlier completely gone, replaced by an aura of absolute, terrifying control.

"Enzo," Yuri forced a laugh, though his hands were shaking as he let go of the weapon. "What is the meaning of this? You're destroying my property over some street punk's mistake?"

Enzo took a slow drag of his cigar, exhaling a thick cloud of blue smoke into the damp air. He walked forward until he was standing just ten feet away from the Russian mob boss.

"A mistake is forgetting to tip the waiter, Yuri," Enzo said softly. "Sending a crew to beat a woman and terrify a seven-year-old child isn't a mistake. It's a declaration of war."

"She was just a message!" Yuri snarled, dropping the act as he realized diplomacy was dead. "You've been stepping on our docks for six months! You thought you could take the port without a fight? I wanted to show you that your precious little empire has soft spots!"

Enzo didn't blink. He took another step closer.

"My empire has no soft spots, Yuri," Enzo said, his voice dropping to a whisper that carried across the entire warehouse. "Because anything soft... I protect with iron."

Without warning, Paulie lunged forward, slamming the butt of his shotgun into Yuri’s stomach. The Russian boss let out a violent gasp, doubling over and vomiting onto the concrete. Paulie grabbed him by the scruff of his collar and dragged him across the floor, dumping him unceremoniously at Enzo’s polished leather shoes.

Yuri coughed, wiping blood from his lip, glaring up at Enzo with hatred. "You're going to start a full-scale war in this city over a schoolteacher you've known for three hours?"

Enzo looked down at him, his face completely devoid of pity.

"She wasn't just a schoolteacher, Yuri," Enzo said, turning on his heel and walking toward the exit. "She was my date. And in my world, if you ruin dinner... you pay the bill."

He glanced back over his shoulder at Paulie and Ray.

"Bring him to the basement. I want him awake when Claire wakes up. She has a few questions of her own."
