Chapter 9 - The Vault Beneath the VaultTen minutes later, Enzo stood before the reinforced steel vault hidden behind his private office bookshelf.

He hadn't opened this specific vault since his father’s funeral. It required a three-tier biometric scan—retina, voice print, and a mechanical brass key that had hung around his neck since he was ten years old.
The heavy door swung outward with a deep, pneumatic hiss.
Inside wasn't money, or gold, or weapons. It was a single wooden box resting on a pedestal, covered in a thick layer of dust.
Enzo stepped inside, his boots echoing sharply on the cold stone floor. He reached out and lifted the lid. Inside lay an old leather-bound journal, a gold pocket watch that had stopped ticking at 3:14 AM on October 12, 1989, and a cassette tape labeled with a single word in his father’s handwriting: Enzo.
He picked up the cassette tape, his hands trembling ever so slightly—the only sign of weakness he would ever allow himself.
He walked out of the vault, carrying the tape to the vintage reel-to-reel player sitting on his desk. He slid the tape into the slot, plugged in a pair of heavy headphones, and pressed play.
A hiss of static filled his ears, followed by the deep, gravelly, unmistakable voice of his father.
“If you’re listening to this, Enzo, it means you survived the wolves long enough to build your own pack. It also means you’ve found the lie.”
Enzo’s breath hitched.
“They told you I died in a car bomb,” the recorded voice continued, steady and unyielding. “They lied. The syndicate wanted me dead because I tried to pull us out of the drug trade and into legitimate commerce—the exact same thing you’ve been trying to do. To protect you and your mother, I had to fake my death and disappear into the deep shadows of the European directorate. But a Marchetti doesn't just disappear. The war was never finished, son. And the man who planted the bomb thirty years ago... is the same man who just infiltrated your city.”
A pause on the tape, the sound of a heavy sigh.
“He didn't come for me, Enzo. He came for the bloodline. And he knows about Claire.”

The tape clicked off.
Before Enzo could process the revelation, a shattering crash echoed from the penthouse upstairs, followed by Sadie’s piercing scream.
