Chapter 4 - Awakening in the DarkWhen Claire finally opened her eyes again, the harsh, sterile lighting of the basement medical suite had been replaced by the warm, soft glow of a bedside lamp.

The rhythmic beeping of the monitor was gone, replaced by the quiet hum of a high-end air purifier. The smell of antiseptic had been pushed aside by the rich, comforting aroma of fresh Italian espresso and toasted brioche.
"Easy now," a voice murmured from the shadows near the corner.
Claire winced, her hand instinctively going to her bandaged head. She turned her neck slowly, wincing at the stiffness in her muscles. Sitting in an oversized leather armchair was Enzo. He had discarded his suit jacket, his white dress shirt unbuttoned at the collar, sleeves rolled up to reveal his tattooed arms. He looked tired, the hard lines of his face softened by the dim light.
"Where... where am I?" Claire whispered, her voice like sandpaper.
"You're in my home," Enzo said, standing up and pouring a small cup of warm water from a porcelain pitcher. He walked over, gently sliding one arm behind her shoulders to lift her head just enough for her to sip.
The water felt like heaven against her dry throat. She drank greedily before sinking back against the plush pillows.
"And Sadie?" Claire asked, panic instantly flaring in her chest. "Where is my baby?"
"She's sleeping in the next room," Enzo said reassuringly, setting the cup down. "Moretti checked her over. A few scrapes on her feet, but she's completely unharmed. She's eating pancakes and watching cartoons right now."
Claire let out a long, shuddering sigh, tears spilling over her lashes. "Thank God... thank God..."
She looked up at Enzo, really looking at him for the first time. The sharp jaw, the intense, piercing eyes that seemed to hold the weight of an entire world.
"Rosa told me you were dangerous," Claire whispered, a faint, exhausted smile touching her lips. "She forgot to mention you're also a rescue squad."
"Rosa talks too much," Enzo replied quietly, pulling his chair closer to the bed. "She also set you up for a hit. Did you know that?"
Claire’s smile vanished, her expression turning grim. She looked down at her hands resting on the blanket. "I... I didn't think it was a setup. But yesterday afternoon, I received a strange call. A man said if I went to Lombardi's to meet Enzo Marchetti, I’d be signing my own death warrant. I thought it was just a crank call from an ex. I... I didn't think they actually meant it."
"They meant it," Enzo said, his voice dropping into that dark, dangerous register. "Yuri Rostov wanted to send me a message. He wanted to break something of mine before I could take his ports."
Claire looked straight into Enzo’s eyes, her own gaze flashing with a sudden, unexpected fire that caught him completely off guard.
"I am not something of yours, Mr. Marchetti," Claire said, her voice steady despite her weakness. "I am a mother. And I am a teacher. I didn't ask to be dragged into your underworld war."
Enzo stared at her for a long, silent moment. Instead of anger, a strange, profound respect bloomed in his chest. Most people—even hardened criminals—trembled when he spoke to them like that. This bruised, exhausted woman in a hospital gown was staring him down with the fury of a tigress protecting her cub.
"You're right," Enzo said quietly, lowering his head slightly in a rare gesture of concession. "You didn't ask for this. But the moment Yuri laid a hand on you, your world and my world collided. And right now... the only way to keep you and Sadie safe is to finish it."
Before Claire could answer, a heavy thud echoed from down the hall, followed by the muffled groan of a man in pain.
Claire stiffened. "What was that?"

Enzo stood up, his face hardening back into the mask of the mafia boss.
"Just room service," Enzo said smoothly, walking toward the heavy oak door. He paused with his hand on the brass knob, looking back over his shoulder. "Stay here, Claire. I have a guest waiting in the office, and it's time to settle the bill."
