Chapter 2 - The Ghost of the Syndicate

"If she dies, Chicago burns with her."The rain was pouring in sheets by the time Dante’s convoy arrived at the abandoned industrial sector near the Chicago River. The coordinates from the burner phone led them to a derelict meatpacking plant—a relic of the city’s older, bloodier history.
Dante didn't wait for his men. He kicked the rusted metal door open, his Glock drawn, his eyes scanning the shadows. The smell of copper and damp concrete filled the air.
"Spread out!" Marcus yelled to the tactical team, but Dante was already moving toward a faint light at the back of the facility.
What he found made his heart violently stop.
On a rusted metal table sat Nia’s platinum wedding band, catching the flickering light of a single overhead bulb. Next to it was a dark, viscous pool of blood that was still wet, dripping slowly onto the concrete floor.
Dante dropped to his knees, his hands trembling as he picked up the ring. Inside the band, the inscription read: Semper Amemus—Always Love.
"No, no, no..." Dante muttered, a rare panic tearing through his chest. He touched the blood on the floor. It was warm.
"Dante," Marcus called out, his flashlight illuminating the wall directly behind the table.
Scrawled in spray paint across the crumbling brick was a message that turned Dante's panic into pure, unadulterated rage:
THE MORETTI DEBT IS DUE. A LIFE FOR A LIFE, BOSS.
"The Bratva," Marcus whispered, his face losing all color. "The Romanov faction. Dante... this is Nikolai’s signature."
Nikolai Romanov. A ghost from Dante’s past. Five years ago, before Dante took over the throne, there was a brutal turf war. Nikolai’s younger brother had been killed in the crossfire—a hit ordered by Dante’s father. Nikolai had sworn an oath to take the most precious thing from the next Moretti boss.
Dante had assumed Nikolai was dead, executed in a purge in Moscow. But he was here. In Chicago. And he had Nia.
"He didn't find her by accident," Dante said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, icy register as he stood up, his wedding ring clenched tightly in his fist. "Nia hid her tracks perfectly from us. The only way Nikolai found her is if someone inside my circle leaked her location. Someone who wanted her gone just as bad as the Bratva did."
"Your family?" Marcus asked, horrified.
"My family," Dante confirmed, his eyes burning with a lethal fire. "They thought they were just getting rid of an unwanted bride. They didn't realize they were handing my child to a butcher."
Dante dialed a number he hadn't used in years—a direct line to the Underground Broker, a man who traded in the deepest secrets of the criminal underworld.
"I need every safehouse, every shipping container, and every dock tied to the Romanov syndicate in the Tri-State area," Dante commanded into the phone. "I don't care about the price. Name it."
"The price is steep, Moretti," the gravelly voice on the other end replied. "But I don't need your money. I need information. I hear your uncle Victor has been making private deals with the Colombians behind your back. Give me his routing numbers, and the Bratva locations are yours."
Dante didn't hesitate for a single fraction of a second. "Done. Check your secure terminal in five minutes. If I don't have the addresses by then, I will personally come and tear your throat out."
He hung up and looked at Marcus. "Get the heavy weapons. We aren't going for a rescue. We are going to war."
Meanwhile, twenty miles away in a soundproofed basement beneath a shipping yard, Nia awoke with a gasp. Her head pounded violently, and her hands were tied securely to a wooden chair.
She immediately panicked, her first instinct turning toward her body. She shifted her weight, feeling the faint, familiar ache in her abdomen. The baby. She was still pregnant. The fall during her capture hadn't broken her water, but she was bleeding from a shallow cut on her forehead.
The heavy steel door of the basement groaned open. A tall man with a heavily scarred face and cold, slate-gray eyes walked in, flanked by two armed guards. Nikolai Romanov.
"Ah, the beautiful Mrs. Moretti," Nikolai said, his accent thick and menacing. He walked over and gently touched her chin with a gloved finger. Nia flinched away, spitting at his boots.
Nikolai laughed, a hollow, terrifying sound. "Such fire. I see why Dante married you. A shame he didn't value you enough to protect you from his own blood."
Nia’s eyes widened despite her terror. "What do you mean?"
"You think you hid from him? You did a good job, little bird. But your husband’s dear Aunt Teresa paid a dirty cop to track your transit card. She gave your location to an intermediary, wanting you shipped out of the country permanently. But the intermediary works for me." Nikolai leaned down, his face inches from hers. "She thought she was buying you a one-way ticket to Europe. Instead, she handed me the ultimate leverage. Dante killed my brother. Now, I kill his legacy."
Nikolai reached into his pocket and pulled out a knife, the blade catching the dim light. He positioned it directly over Nia’s stomach.

"Let’s see how long it takes for the great Dante Moretti to beg."
HOOOOOOK FOR NEXT CHAP: Just as Nikolai raises the knife, an explosion rocks the building. But it’s not Dante who breaches the room—it’s a rogue faction of the Moretti family sent to eliminate Nia before Dante can find her and learn the truth of their betrayal.
