Chapter 5 - The Labor of War

"The doors are melting, Dante! She’s out of time!"The drive to the Wisconsin border was a blur of high-speed maneuvers and pure adrenaline. Dante pushed his armored SUV to its absolute limits, blowing past state troopers who didn't dare chase a vehicle moving at 130 miles per hour.
As he approached the heavily wooded property where the secure safehouse was hidden, the night sky was painted an ominous orange. The safehouse—a reinforced concrete lodge—was completely engulfed in flames. Nikolai Romanov’s mercenary trucks were parked in a defensive perimeter around the structure, their heavy caliber weapons firing continuously into the reinforced bunker doors below the garage.
Dante didn't slow down. He aimed his SUV directly at the central command truck where Nikolai stood barking orders.
CRASH.
The impact was cataclysmic. The SUV pulverized the side of the truck, sending mercenaries flying and creating a barrier of twisted metal. The airbags deployed, but Dante sliced through the nylon with his knife, kicking his crumpled door open before the smoke could clear.
He stepped into the firefight with a weapon in each hand, a modern-day god of war fueled by sheer desperation. Every shot he fired found a mark. The Bratva mercenaries, caught off guard by the lone wolf attack, began to fall back.
"Moretti!" Nikolai screamed through the chaos, diving behind a burning tire stack. "You're too late! The smoke will suffocate her before I even get to kill her!"
Dante ignored him, fighting his way toward the bunker entrance. He threw a fragmentation grenade at the remaining guards blocking the stairwell, the explosion clearing the path. He tumbled down the smoking concrete stairs, coughing violently as the toxic air filled his lungs.
The steel blast doors were warped from the intense heat of thermite charges the mercenaries had used. Dante threw his weight against the manual release lever, his muscles tearing under the strain. With a horrific screech of metal, the door budged open just enough for him to squeeze through.
Inside, the air was marginally clearer, but the scene was a nightmare.
Marcus lay against the wall, a severe bullet wound to his thigh, his service weapon empty. In the furthest corner of the bunker, wrapped in a tactical blanket, was Nia.
She was drenched in sweat, her face contorted in an agony that had nothing to do with the warfare outside.
"Dante..." she gasped, her hands gripping a metal pipe on the wall. "The baby... it’s coming. It’s too early... it’s coming now!"
The stress of the kidnapping, the explosion, and the sheer terror had triggered precipitous labor. She was only twenty-six weeks along.
Dante dropped his weapons and fell to his knees beside her, his hands covered in soot. He looked at Marcus, who was losing consciousness from blood loss. "Marcus! Stay with me!"
"I'm here, Boss..." Marcus groaned, trying to apply a tourniquet to his own leg. "The medical kit... under the bench."
Dante grabbed the advanced trauma kit, his hands trembling as he opened it. He had killed hundreds of men, but he had never delivered a life. Especially not a premature baby in the middle of a burning fortress while an international syndicate surrounded the building.
"Nia, look at me," Dante pleaded, taking her face in his hands, forcing her to lock eyes with him through her tears. "Look at me. I am right here. I am never leaving you again. I don't care about the family, I don't care about the throne. It’s just you and me."
"Dante... your mother... she told me..." Nia cried out as another massive contraction hit her body. "She said you would never believe it was yours... she said she forged the records... to make you hate me..."
The truth hit Dante like a physical blow. The medical file was a lie. A brilliant, desperate forgery by Elena Moretti to break his spirit and ensure Nia’s execution. The child was his. The daughter he had prayed for was a Moretti.
"I know," Dante whispered, tears finally clearing tracks through the soot on his face. "I know the truth, my love. I never doubted you. Now, you need to push. For our daughter. Push!"
Nia screamed, a sound of pure agony and maternal strength that drowned out the sound of the gunfire filtering down from the surface.
Outside, the heavy boots of Nikolai Romanov began to echo down the concrete stairs. He had realized Dante was trapped inside.

"Moretti!" Nikolai’s voice echoed through the warped door. "Come out and die like a man, or I seal this bunker and turn it into your family vault!"
HOOOOOOK FOR NEXT CHAP: As Nia gives birth to a fragile, barely breathing baby girl, Nikolai breaches the final defense line. Dante must make a heartbreaking choice: stay and perform CPR on his newborn daughter, or pick up his weapon to defend them from the final assassin.
