Chapter 4 - The Ghost in the MansionMateo felt his knees give way. For five agonizing years, he had wept over a grave containing ashes. He had stared at her photograph every night, remembering her laughter, her warmth, her soft touch. Now, seeing her alive, trapped like an animal behind heavy glass, a primal sob tore through his chest.

"Clara," he breathed, the sound swallowed by the thunder.
He found a set of storm doors leading down to the mansion's basement. He smashed the rusted padlock with a heavy stone, forced the wooden doors open, and slipped into the pitch-black cellar.
The air inside was thick with the smell of damp earth, mold, and age-old secrets. Mateo pulled a small flashlight from the Warden’s coat pocket and clicked it on. The beam illuminated stone walls, dusty wine racks, and stacks of old wooden crates.
He searched frantically for a way up to the second floor, but his boot struck a loose board. The wood gave a hollow THUD.
Check the floorboards.
Mateo knelt down immediately. He used his pocketknife to pry up the warped oak plank. Beneath it, wrapped in oiled cloth, was a heavy iron box.
He forced the lock open with the blade. Inside lay two items:
A small, silver USB flash drive engraved with the initials M.V. (Marcus Vance).
A leather-bound journal written in Clara’s precise, neat handwriting.
Mateo opened the journal to the last entry, dated the night of the fire:
If anyone finds this, know that I did not run. Marcus Vance discovered I had documented his human trafficking and money laundering networks. He threatened to kill Mateo and baby Elena if I didn't give him the master key. I hid the drive. Warden Vargas offered to 'protect' me, but it was a trap. He is working with Vance. If Mateo is reading this... my love, forgive me for putting you through this hell. The key to everything is in the hands of the innocent.
Tears scorched Mateo’s eyes. She hadn't abandoned him. She had sacrificed her freedom to protect him and Elena.
Suddenly, a floorboard creaked directly above him.
Mateo pocketed the flash drive and the journal, creeping up the wooden stairs toward the main hall. The house was deathly quiet, save for the ticking of a grandfather clock in the foyer.
He moved like a phantom up the grand staircase to the second floor. He reached the door at the end of the hallway—the door to the room where he had seen Clara. It was secured with a heavy digital keypad and a double deadbolt.
"Clara!" Mateo whispered urgently through the thick oak door, knocking softly. "Clara, it's me! It's Mateo!"
There was a sudden gasp from inside. Heavy footsteps rushed toward the door.
"Mateo?!" Her voice was faint, trembling, breaking with emotion. "Oh God, Mateo! Is it really you? How are you here?!"
"I'm here to get you out!" Mateo said, examining the electronic lock. "What's the code?"
"I don't know!" she cried softly. "Vargas never lets me see it! Mateo, you have to leave! He has security cameras set up all over the property! He’ll be here any minute!"
"I'm not leaving without you!" Mateo declared, raising his heavy foot to kick at the door hinges.
Before his boot could make contact, the sharp, cold barrel of a gun pressed against the back of his neck.
"I knew you’d come here, Mateo," a smooth, cultured voice purred from the darkness behind him. "You always were so predictably romantic."
May you like
Mateo froze. It wasn't the Warden.
It was Marcus Vance.
