Chapter 7 - The Final ShowdownThe mansion was completely encircled. At least twenty police cruisers, two SWAT vans, and a dozen snipers had formed a lethal perimeter around the property.

Mateo looked out through the sheer curtains of the living room window. Lasers from sniper rifles danced across the walls like red fireflies.
"They're not going to listen to us, Mateo," Clara said, her voice laced with panic. "Vance’s friends in the department gave the shoot-on-sight order."
"We can't go out there," Mateo realized. "They’ll open fire before we can say a word."
Vance sat against the base of the grand staircase, laughing softly through his bloodied teeth. "I told you... you can't beat the system. Hand me the drive, Mateo. I can make one call. I can tell them to stand down. I can get you life in prison instead of a bullet in the chest tonight. It's the best offer you'll ever get."
Mateo looked at Vance, then at Clara, and finally at his daughter, Elena.
Elena reached into her small coat pocket and pulled out her social worker's broken cellphone—the one she had picked up off the visiting room floor earlier that afternoon.
"Daddy," Elena said calmly, handing him the phone. "I recorded him."
Mateo blinked. "What?"
Elena pointed to the screen. The screen was cracked, but the voice memo app was active, showing a recording timer that had been running for over two hours.
"When Mr. Vance’s men picked me up from the social worker's car," Elena explained softly, "I turned on the recording. I hid the phone in my pocket. Everything he said... about paying off the Warden, about framing you, about keeping Mommy locked up... it's all on here."
Vance’s face went completely deathly pale. The cocky smile vanished instantly. "Give me that phone!" he screamed, lunging forward on his hands and knees.
Mateo kicked Vance back across the floor. He took the phone, connected it to the mansion's high-speed Wi-Fi network, and hit UPLOAD.
He didn't just send it to the police. He sent the audio file, along with digital scans of Clara’s journal, directly to every major news network, local television station, and social media platform in the state. Within seconds, the hashtag #JusticeForMateo began to trend worldwide.
Outside, the megaphone boomed again. "Vargas! You have thirty seconds to exit the building, or we breach!"
Mateo took a deep breath. He held Clara’s hand in his left, and Elena’s in his right.

"We walk out together," Mateo said quietly. "In the light. Where everybody can see us."
He unlocked the heavy double front doors of the mansion and pushed them wide open.
