Chapter 4 - Ashes and Confessions

The battle in the mansion was short, brutal, and decisive. By the time the acrid smoke cleared from the grand foyer, Adriano’s private tactical team had secured the perimeter, neutralizing Rossi’s men and pinning the surviving infiltrators against the shattered front gates.
Adriano walked through the smoking ruins of his foyer, his suit jacket ruined, a shallow graze bleeding on his left shoulder. He didn't care about the wound. He didn't care about the millions of dollars in property damage.
He cared about one thing.
"Rebecca!" he shouted, throwing open the heavy door to the basement storage rooms.
From behind a row of heavy oak wine racks, a small figure stirred. Rebecca emerged, clutching Clementine tightly. The little girl was fast asleep again, exhausted by the trauma of the night, her head tucked safely into the crook of her mother's neck.
Rebecca’s face was smeared with soot, her uniform torn at the shoulder, but her eyes were fierce and unbroken.
"Is it over?" she asked, her voice steady.
Adriano stepped forward, dropping his gun onto a crate. He looked at the child, then up at Rebecca, the hard, impenetrable armor of the Providence underworld completely melting away.
"It’s over," Adriano whispered. "Rossi is gone. The men who killed Thomas... their network has been dismantled. You’re free, Rebecca. Truly free."
Rebecca swallowed hard, feeling the immense weight of three years of fear, grief, and running finally slide off her shoulders. She looked at the man who had kept her hidden, protected, and watched over from the shadows.
"Why, Adriano?" she asked softly. "Why risk everything for a maid from West Virginia?"အစိတ်အပိုင်း
Adriano reached out, his calloused fingertips gently brushing a smudge of soot from her cheek.
"Because the day Thomas died, a part of this city’s soul died with him," Adriano said, his voice thick with emotion. "I watched him from afar years ago—before the corruption took root. He was the only man in my organization who refused to take dirty money. When I found out what Rossi did to him, and what they did to you... I swore that if I couldn't save him, I would spend the rest of my life making sure his family never bled alone again."
Rebecca stared at him, seeing past the title of crime boss, past the expensive suits and the ruthless reputation, seeing the broken, fiercely loyal man beneath.

"You didn't have to carry that burden alone," she whispered.
"I did," Adriano replied. "Because you were carrying mine."
