Chapter 8 - The Counter-Strike at MidnightAt 2:00 AM, the federal courthouse in downtown Chicago was dark, quiet, and heavily guarded—or so Spencer’s high-priced defense lawyers thought when they filed their emergency injunction in the digital drop-box.

They expected the motion to sit safely until dawn, locking Clara out of the corporate accounts before she could consolidate her power.
They didn't account for Clara walking into the courthouse accompanied by Vance Senior, three federal marshals, and a forensic accountant carrying two hard drives containing five years of illicit wire transfers linked directly to Spencer’s secret offshore accounts.
"Judge Harrison is asleep at his estate in Lake Forest," the duty clerk stammered, his eyes widening in terror as the federal marshals flashed their badges and walked straight past the security desk.
"Wake him up," Clara said, her voice cutting through the quiet lobby with absolute, chilling authority. "Tell him the new majority owner of Vance Global is here to present evidence of corporate treason, obstruction of justice, and attempted murder."
Within twenty minutes, Judge Harrison—disheveled, wearing a bathrobe beneath his heavy overcoat—was sitting behind his bench in a private chambers hearing room, staring at the glowing forensic audit on the prosecutor's laptop.
Spencer’s lead defense attorney, a slick-haired man named Montgomery, rushed into the chambers ten minutes later, panting heavily. "Your Honor! This is an outrage! An illegal midnight ambush! My client demands an immediate injunction against this—this waitress!"
Clara stood up from her chair, smoothing down her jacket—not the faded apron from the Copper Kettle, but a tailored midnight-blue blazer Vance Senior had insisted she wear.
She walked slowly toward the defense attorney, stopping just inches away. She looked at him the exact way the woman in the fur coat had looked at the old man in the snow outside the iron gates.
"My name is Clara Vance now," she said softly, her voice carrying the unmistakable weight of steel. "And your client is currently learning that empires aren't built on slick paperwork and expensive suits. They're built on concrete, blood, and loyalty. Three things you know nothing about."
Judge Harrison looked down at the financial trails, then up at Montgomery. With a slow, deliberate motion, he picked up his heavy mahogany gavel and brought it down hard.

Clack.
"Injunction denied," the judge ruled flatly. "All corporate assets remain under the full legal control of Madame Chairman Clara Vance. Bail for Spencer Vance is revoked indefinitely."
