CHAPTER 2 — "She Thought the Police Came Too Late... Then the 'Dead' Witness Walked Into the Room."

Marissa's smile disappeared.

Only for a second.

Then it returned.

She calmly removed the pillow from Arthur's face.

Smoothed her hair.

Pinched her own eyes until tears appeared.

By the time the hospice door burst open...

She looked like the grieving daughter every nurse admired.

"Oh thank God!" she sobbed.

"They stopped breathing! I tried to save them!"

Two detectives rushed inside.

Judge Harrison followed.

Behind him came our attorney.

Then three forensic investigators.

Marissa cried harder.

"They became confused... Arthur pulled out his own IV... Eleanor was hallucinating..."

She sounded convincing.

Until Detective Ruiz asked one question.

"Then why did you lock the hospice room from the inside?"

Silence.

Marissa blinked.

"I..."

She searched desperately for an answer.

Instead...

Another voice interrupted.

"I think I can answer that."

Everyone turned.

An elderly nurse stepped forward.

Margaret Collins.

Eighty-one years old.

Quiet.

Forgettable.

Invisible.

Marissa barely recognized her.

She should have.

Margaret had worked for Arthur's family for forty-two years.

When Marissa started bribing employees...

Margaret pretended to accept the money.

Every payment.

Every conversation.

Every threat.

She secretly documented them all.

The detective opened a folder.

Bank transfers.

Recorded calls.

Signed statements.

Then the attorney placed a tablet on Arthur's bed.

"I believe we should hear the recording."

Marissa frowned.

"What recording?"

The room filled with her own voice.

Crystal clear.

"Tonight I forge the deed..."

"I paid every nurse..."

"Flush your ashes into the sewer..."

Color drained from her face.

"No..."

Her knees weakened.

"No... that's edited..."

The detective calmly shook his head.

"The recording was transmitted live to four secure servers."

"There are no edits."

Then came the final blow.

Judge Harrison removed an envelope from his briefcase.

"Mr. Whitcomb amended his estate eight months ago."

Marissa stared.

Confused.

The judge continued.

"Any beneficiary proven to abuse, manipulate, isolate, threaten, or exploit either Arthur or Eleanor forfeits every dollar."

She whispered...

"What?"

The attorney smiled.

"You inherited nothing."

"Not the mansion."

"Not the investments."

"Not the foundation."

"Nothing."

Marissa screamed.

"You can't do this!"

Arthur slowly opened his eyes.

For the first time that night...

He spoke.

One raspy sentence.

"Oh...

Yes we can."

The room fell silent.

But Arthur wasn't finished.

Neither was Eleanor.

Because the greatest secret had never been about the inheritance.

It was about Daniel.

May you like

Their son.

The man everyone believed had died three years earlier.
