Chapter 8 - THE NEW HORIZON

Six months later.

The ocean breeze swept across the balcony of our new apartment in La Jolla, carrying the salty scent of the Pacific and the sound of crashing waves below.

The apartment wasn't a sprawling suburban mansion with hidden cameras and cold, polished marble floors. It was bright, cozy, and filled with the warm afternoon sun, the walls painted in cheerful shades of yellow and seafoam green.

On the living room rug, Nancy sat with her legs crossed, laughing hysterically as our new golden retriever puppy licked her nose. Her scar had faded to a thin, silver line—a silent reminder of a nightmare that had long since passed, but also a symbol of how strong both of us had become.

The legal battle had been swift and devastating for the Miller dynasty. With the security footage, the forensic audio logs, and Evelyn's own unhinged confessions caught on tape, the family trust had been dissolved under federal investigation for financial manipulation and child endangerment. Brandon and Evelyn were currently awaiting trial in federal custody, their high-priced defense lawyers abandoning them one by one as the mountain of evidence grew insurmountable.

I walked out onto the balcony, holding a mug of steaming black coffee, and leaned against the railing.

The wind caught my hair, blowing it gently across my face. I looked out at the endless horizon, where the deep blue of the ocean met the golden light of the afternoon sun.

For the first time in my life, I wasn't waiting for someone else's approval. I wasn't walking on eggshells in a house built on secrets and poison.

From inside the living room, Nancy's sweet voice drifted out through the open sliding door.

"Mom! Come look! The puppy is dancing!"

I smiled, taking a warm sip of my coffee, and turned back inside to join my daughter in the sunlight.
