CHAPTER 1 — THE COUCH THAT WOULDN'T LET HIM REST

The day I brought home the couch, my dog knew something I didn't.
I should have listened.
After weeks of searching, I finally found the perfect couch. It was modern, dark gray, incredibly comfortable, and less than half the price I'd seen anywhere else.
The salesman smiled proudly.
"Estate sale," he said. "Hardly used."
It looked flawless.
Not a stain.
Not a scratch.
I loaded it into my truck, brought it home, and proudly placed it against the living room wall.
Jerry, my seven-year-old Golden Retriever, walked over the moment I finished.
Normally, he'd jump onto any new piece of furniture without hesitation.
Not this time.
He froze.
His ears flattened.
His tail stopped wagging.
Then he slowly sniffed around the couch.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
Finally, he stopped beside the right armrest.
He growled.
A deep, low growl I'd only heard once before—when a burglar had tried breaking into my garage years ago.
"What is it, buddy?" I laughed.
Instead of answering with his usual happy bark, Jerry scratched the armrest.
Again.
Again.
Harder.
I pulled him away.
Five minutes later...
He came back.
He scratched until little threads started coming loose.
"Jerry! Stop!"
He ignored me.
I tried treats.
His favorite tennis ball.
A walk.
Nothing worked.
Every few minutes he'd return to that exact spot, barking desperately, whining as though someone trapped inside needed help.
By midnight I couldn't sleep.
Jerry stood beside the couch, staring at it without blinking.
Then...
He began digging with so much force that one of his paws started bleeding.
That was enough.
Whatever was inside that couch...
Jerry believed it was important enough to hurt himself trying to reach it.
With shaking hands, I grabbed a utility knife.
One careful slice through the expensive fabric.
Foam spilled onto the floor.
Then old wooden framing.
Rusty springs.
And buried deep inside...
A tightly wrapped black plastic package.
It wasn't supposed to be there.
When I picked it up...
It felt warm.
And something inside...
May you like
Moved.
