Chapter 10 - The Last LedgerSix months later, the Chicago Tribune ran a front-page exposé detailing the collapse of the city's largest underground financial network, citing anonymous whistleblower documents that traced billions in illicit syndication directly back to fallen corporate titans and corrupt politicians.

Federal prosecutors called it the biggest financial takedown in the history of Illinois law enforcement.

In a quiet penthouse high above the Chicago skyline, I sat at a minimalist glass desk, watching the morning news broadcast flicker on the wall-mounted screen. My hair was longer, my posture straight, and the soft-spoken woman in cardigans was nothing more than a ghost of the past.

Eli, now walking and full of chaotic toddler energy, was currently attempting to scale Gabriel's trousers while the most feared man in Chicago tried—and utterly failed—to look stern.

"He's going to be an accountant, Gabriel," I said smoothly, taking a sip of my coffee as I watched the little boy steal one of Gabriel's gold-plated fountain pens. "Look at him. He's already targeting executive assets."

Gabriel scooped Eli up with one effortless motion, tossing the laughing baby into the air before catching him against his broad chest. He walked over to my desk, his dark eyes fixed on mine with an intensity that still took my breath away.

"If he grows up to be half as dangerous, brilliant, and stubborn as his aunt Claire," Gabriel said, leaning down to press a warm kiss to my forehead, "the rest of the world won't stand a chance."

Mason stepped into the office, holding a fresh leather portfolio under his arm. "Private jet is fueled and prepped for the Geneva summit, boss. And the federal marshals just confirmed Vance's assets have been fully transferred to the Bennett-Kane Foundation."

Gabriel didn't look away from me. "Let them audit us. We have nothing to hide."

I closed the ledger in front of me, the numbers balanced down to the very last cent. I had never belonged in Gabriel Kane’s world when I started. But sitting here now, surrounded by the wreckage of our enemies and the fierce, unyielding protection of the man who owned the city, I realized something fundamental.

I hadn't entered his world.

I had simply conquered it.
