Chapter 2 - THE BLOODLINE CONSPIRACYThe engagement party collapsed into chaos the moment the police cruisers drove off into the rain.

By midnight, Ryan and I were sitting in the expansive study of his parents' estate. The room smelled of old leather, mahogany, and tension. Arthur Vance poured himself three fingers of scotch, his back turned to us, while Ryan’s mother, Eleanor, sat quietly on the velvet sofa, nervously twisting her diamond ring.
"Ryan, give us a moment," Arthur said quietly without turning around.
"No," Ryan replied firmly, holding my hand tightly. "Whatever you have to say to Claire, you say in front of me. Darlene made an accusation back there, Dad. She mentioned a shell company. What was she talking about?"
Arthur sighed, a sound heavy with decades of buried secrets. He turned around, his sharp grey eyes fixing on me.
"Claire... your father, Richard, was a brilliant man," Arthur began, leaning against his mahogany desk. "But twenty years ago, his business was on the verge of bankruptcy because Darlene was secretly siphoning money to fund her gambling debts in Macao."
I blinked, stunned. "Gambling debts? Dad told me he lost his first logistics contract due to market crash."
"He lied to protect you girls," Arthur explained. "Richard came to me. He wanted to save his remaining assets for you, Claire. Not Mia—because even back then, Darlene was grooming Mia to be just like her. Richard created an off-shore entity called Aegis Holdings. He funneled $60,000 into it—not just as an inheritance, but as access keys."
"Access keys?" I echoed, my brow furrowing. "To what?"
"To a safe deposit box in Zurich containing the original deeds of the Miller Enterprise properties," Arthur said, taking a slow sip of his drink. "When your father died in that car crash seven years ago... it wasn't an accident."
The room seemed to lose all oxygen.
"What?" Ryan stood up, his posture rigid. "Dad, what are you saying?!"
"The brake lines on Richard's car were cut," Arthur revealed, his voice dropping to a solemn register. "The police ruled it a mechanical failure because Darlene paid off the chief medical examiner at the time. I couldn't prove it then without putting my own family in danger. Darlene wasn't working alone. She was working for a syndicate that uses small-town logistics companies to launder illegal funds."
I felt nauseous. The image of my father’s warm smile flashed in my mind, replaced instantly by the brutal memory of his crushed car.
"So the $60,000..." I whispered, my voice trembling.
"...is not money, Claire," Arthur finished. "It’s an authorization code sequence tied to an account holding decrypted evidence of an international laundering ring worth tens of millions. Darlene doesn't want sixty thousand dollars for Mia’s rent. She needs that code sequence to clear her debt with the syndicate before they execute her."
Suddenly, my phone vibrated violently on the glass table.
It was an unknown number.
Ryan looked at me, nodding slowly. I swiped the screen and put it on speaker.
"Claire," a harsh, distorted voice came through the speaker. "You think having your mother arrested makes you safe? You have twenty-four hours to drop the DA charges and deliver the trust clearance codes to Pier 42."
"Who is this?" I demanded, fighting to keep my voice steady.
"If you don't," the voice continued coldly, ignoring my question, "check your sister's social media live stream right now."
The line went dead.
Ryan instantly pulled up Mia’s Instagram account on his phone. A live broadcast was running. Mia was sitting in her luxury apartment, tied to a chair, her eyes wide with panic, a tape covering her mouth. Behind her stood a tall man in a dark suit, his face obscured by shadow, holding a silenced pistol directly to her head.
