Chapter 4 - CHESSBOARD OF BETRAYALViktor’s face contorted in rage. He leveled the gun at my forehead, his finger tightening on the trigger. "You stupid bitch—"

BANG!
A gunshot echoed through the warehouse, but it didn't come from Viktor’s gun. A red laser point appeared right on Viktor's shoulder, and a high-caliber round shattered his knee. He collapsed to the floor with a agonized scream, his handgun skittering across the concrete floor.
Before Mia could even scream, the metal doors of the warehouse were smashed open by tactical vehicles. Flashbangs detonated, blinding the dark corners, as heavily armed federal agents flooded the room.
"FBI! DON'T MOVE! GET ON THE GROUND!"
Mia threw her hands up, screeching frantically. "I'm a hostage! I was forced to do this! Claire, tell them!"
I stood completely still as agents tackled Viktor to the ground and handcuffed Mia, pulling her roughly to her knees.
Agent Vance—Ryan’s uncle, head of the regional FBI Financial Crimes Taskforce—stepped out from behind the tactical team, holding an active arrest warrant.
"Mia Miller," Agent Vance declared coldly. "You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit extortion, wire fraud, and accessory to murder."
"Claire! Help me!" Mia sobbed, her high-society persona completely shattered. "Mom made me do it! She said if we didn't get the money, the loan sharks would kill us both! Claire, we're sisters!"
I walked over to her, looking down at her stained designer clothes and her smudged makeup.
"Sisters don't help cover up their father's murder, Mia," I said, my voice ice cold. "You traded your soul for expensive clothes and fake status. Enjoy paying for them in federal prison."
As the agents dragged Mia away screaming my name, Ryan ran into the warehouse, wrapping his arms tightly around me. I leaned into his chest, letting out a breath I felt like I’d been holding for years.
"It's over," Ryan whispered, kissing the top of my head. "It's finally over."
"Not yet," I replied, pulling back to look at Arthur, who had just walked in behind the agents. "Arthur... Darlene mentioned a shell company linked to your firm. Why did she think she could blackmail you?"
Arthur's face remained impassive, but his posture hardened. He motioned for us to walk outside away from the federal agents.
Standing under the misty streetlights of the pier, Arthur took a heavy breath.
"Twenty years ago, when your father discovered Darlene’s embezzlement, he didn't come to me just for legal advice, Claire," Arthur confessed, his voice laced with regret. "He came to me to hide funds because he discovered that my former senior partner was the mastermind behind the laundering ring."
My heart dropped. "Your partner?"
"Yes. A man named Charles Montgomery," Arthur said. "I spent the last fifteen years secretly building a case against Montgomery and his syndicate. I used your father's trust as the ultimate trap. Darlene was just Montgomery's pawn. And tonight, by smashing that drive, you triggered the fail-safe."
"What fail-safe?" Ryan asked, his eyes narrowing at his father.
"The real data was never on that flash drive," Arthur revealed, pulling out a satellite phone. "The moment Claire activated the micro-camera during the confrontation with Viktor, the live feed streamed Viktor's face directly to Interpol. Ten minutes ago, Charles Montgomery was arrested at JFK International Airport while attempting to board a private jet to Dubai."
I stared at Arthur in disbelief. The web of deceit was far larger than I had ever imagined.
"So Darlene... Mia... Montgomery... they're all finished?" I asked.
"They're facing life sentences," Arthur confirmed. "But Claire... there's one thing your father left in that Zurich account that isn't financial evidence."
"What is it?"
Arthur pulled a sealed, yellowed envelope from his inner coat pocket and handed it to me.
"He gave this to me the day before he died," Arthur said softly. "He told me to give it to you only when you were finally free of Darlene."
May you like
My hands trembled as I took the envelope. Written on the front in my father’s elegant handwriting were four words:
To my brave Claire.
