CHAPTER 1 – THEY CHOSE HIS FUTURE OVER MY SON'S LIFE

The sound Noah made haunted me long before the ambulance arrived.

It wasn't a cry.

It wasn't even a scream.

It was the desperate, choking sound of a little boy fighting for every breath while the people who were supposed to love him argued that his pain was inconvenient.

I knelt beside him on the basement floor, sliding one hand beneath his trembling shoulders.

"Stay with me, sweetheart. Mommy's here."

His lips were turning pale.

Every inhale came in short, broken gasps that rattled through his tiny chest.

He looked at me with terrified eyes.

"Mom... I can't..."

The sentence never finished.

His body curled tighter around his ribs.

I had seen enough emergency room visits during Noah's asthma attacks years earlier to know this wasn't panic.

Something inside him was seriously injured.

Upstairs, the adults were still arguing.

Not about Noah.

About Chase.

"What happens if the police come?" my sister Lauren whispered frantically.

"He didn't mean it."

"He'll lose his scholarship."

"My baby shouldn't have his life ruined."

Not one of them asked if Noah would survive.

That realization broke something inside me forever.

The ambulance pulled into the driveway less than six minutes after my 911 call.

To me, it felt like six hours.

Two paramedics rushed downstairs carrying equipment.

One took a single look at Noah before barking orders.

"Oxygen now."

The other gently touched Noah's side.

The little boy screamed in agony.

The paramedic's expression changed instantly.

"What happened?"

Before I could answer, Lauren stepped forward.

"They were wrestling."

"No," I said.

"They weren't."

"He was attacked."

My mother grabbed my arm.

"Emma, stop exaggerating."

The paramedic slowly turned toward her.

"Ma'am..."

"Please stop talking."

His voice had become cold.

He looked back at Noah.

"Buddy, did someone hit you?"

Noah nodded weakly.

"Who?"

A tiny finger lifted.

It pointed directly at Chase.

Silence filled the basement.

Chase immediately burst into tears.

"I didn't mean it!"

"He made me mad!"

The paramedic exchanged a glance with his partner.

One quietly stepped away.

A minute later, I heard him speaking into his radio.

"We need law enforcement responding to this address."

Possible pediatric assault.

My mother's face turned white.

"No police!"

She actually stepped between the paramedics and the stairs.

"This is a family matter."

The senior paramedic looked at her in disbelief.

"No, ma'am."

"This is a medical emergency."

"And if anyone interferes again..."

"I'll have you removed."

For the first time that afternoon...

Someone stood between my son and the people trying to protect his attacker.

As Noah was loaded into the ambulance, I climbed inside beside him.

My father pounded on the rear doors.

"Emma!"

"If you report this..."

"Don't bother coming back."

I looked him straight in the eyes.

Then the ambulance doors closed.

That was the last time I saw my childhood home as my family.

Because by sunrise...

The doctors would tell me Noah had been far closer to dying than anyone realized.
