Chapter 10 - The Grand Hotel and the Unexpected TwistThe Grand Hotel downtown lived up to its name—towering glass architecture, marble floors, and a lobby that smelled of expensive champagne and old money.

I didn't knock on the door of penthouse suite 1402. I used the master key card that had fallen out of Nolan’s pocket during our kitchen fight two weeks ago—a card I had kept in my jacket pocket ever since, waiting for the right moment.

The electronic lock clicked green.

I pushed the heavy mahogany door open and stepped inside.

Nolan was standing by the floor-to-ceiling window overlooking the Minneapolis-St. Paul skyline, swirling his scotch glass, wearing a smug, triumphant grin as he watched the elevator bank outside.

He didn't turn around immediately when the door clicked shut.

"Took you long enough, Ava," Nolan purred, not looking back. "I knew you'd see reason. The boy scout was never going to be able to protect you from the real world anyway."

"He didn't send Ava," I said.

Nolan froze.

He spun around slowly, his scotch glass slipping from his fingers and shattering against the marble floor, amber liquid splashing across his Italian leather shoes. His eyes went wide as saucers as he stared at me standing in the doorway.

"You?" Nolan stammered, backing up against the glass window. "How did you... the front desk—"

"Your security protocols are garbage, Nolan," I said, taking slow, deliberate steps toward him across the marble floor. "Just like your business ethics. Just like your threats."

Nolan panicked, his hand diving frantically into the pocket of his tailored blazer. "Stay back! You're trespassing! I'll call security—I'll have you thrown in prison for the rest of your life!"

Before his hand could clear his pocket, I lunged forward, grabbing him by the collar and slamming him hard against the glass window. The entire skyscraper tower seemed to vibrate beneath our feet.

"Call whoever you want," I whispered, my face inches from his, adrenaline roaring in my ears. "Because while you were sitting here playing mastermind, recording videos, and buying mortgages... you missed one very important detail."

Nolan struggled against my grip, gasping for air. "What... what detail?"

The front door of the penthouse suite swung wide open behind us.

Footsteps echoed across the marble floor—heavy, confident, and accompanied by the crisp sound of official badges clicking against heavy wool uniforms.

Nolan’s eyes darted past my shoulder, and all the color drained completely from his face.

Standing in the doorway wasn't just a hotel security guard. It was a full federal task force, led by an FBI financial crimes investigator holding a thick stack of federal arrest warrants.

"Nolan Vance?" the lead agent announced, stepping into the room with a cold, professional smile. "You're under arrest for corporate wire fraud, extortion, interstate harassment, and unlawful asset manipulation."

Nolan stopped struggling entirely, his knees buckling beneath him as federal agents stepped forward, slapping heavy steel handcuffs onto his wrists.

As they dragged him past me toward the exit, Nolan shot me one last look of pure, unadulterated hatred.

"You think you won?" he snarled over his shoulder. "She'll get tired of you, Lawson. People like you always end up alone."

"Maybe," I said, watching as they hauled him out the door and locked it behind them. "But not today."

An hour later, I walked back into our St. Paul loft.

The apartment was warm, quiet, and safe. The city lights twinkled outside the large industrial windows, casting a golden glow across the hardwood floors.

Ava was sitting on the living room floor, waiting, wrapped in my gray hoodie, clutching a mug of coffee. When the front door unlocked, she bolted upright, running down the hallway.

She threw herself into my arms so hard I stumbled back against the closed door, wrapping her arms around my neck and burying her face in my shoulder.

"Is it over?" she whispered, her voice trembling. "Is he really gone?"

"It's over," I said, pulling her as close as humanly possible, kissing the top of her head, breathing in the scent of vanilla that had anchored me through every storm for the last nine months. "Federal custody. No bail this time. He's done."

Ava let out a long, shuddering breath, the tension of the last two weeks finally melting completely out of her shoulders. She pulled back just enough to look up at me, a brilliant, tearful smile illuminating her face.

"You really are something else, Ben Lawson," she whispered.

May you like

"Yeah?" I smiled, sliding my hands down to grip her waist, pulling her flush against me. "Does that mean I finally get to finish eating my sesame noodles?"

Ava laughed—that bright, beautiful sound that could drag me out of any darkness from two rooms away—and pulled me down into a kiss that finally felt like coming home.
