Chapter 1 - The First DominoThe mechanical click of the hotel door latching shut sounded final, but Emma Whitmore felt no panic. Her pulse remained remarkably steady at seventy-two beats per minute.

Inside the suite, Alexander Carter loosened his collar further, turning his back on his bride to address Clare Bennett.
“He’s gone,” Clare said, her voice dripping with an insincere sweetness that made Alexander turn back toward the doorway, suddenly realizing Emma hadn't actually left.
Emma stood right where she was, her fingers resting lightly on the surface of the mahogany side table.
“You’re still here,” Alexander said, his tone sharpening with irritation. “I told you to wait in the lobby car, Emma.”
“And I told you that my name is on the title of this hotel,” Emma replied smoothly. Her voice carried a chilling composure that finally pierced Alexander’s armor of arrogance. “In fact, Alexander, every square foot of the Grand Meridian—including the very mattress Ms. Bennett is defiling—belongs to Whitmore Holdings. You are standing in my house.”
Alexander scoffed, stepping forward. “Don’t be melodramatic. Whitmore Holdings is a corporate entity, and Carter Industries holds the controlling operational stake. We signed the merger agreement this morning. You are my wife on paper, nothing more.”
“On paper,” Emma repeated, a thin smile touching her lips. She reached into the small clutch bag hanging from her wrist, withdrawing a sleek black smartphone. “Let’s talk about paper, husband.”
Clare stood up from the bed, smoothing down her midnight-blue gown. “Alexander, don’t listen to her bluffing. She’s just humiliated. Let security escort her out.”
“Security?” Emma tilted her head. “Clare, darling, do you even know who currently pays your salary? Carter Industries hasn't balanced its ledger in three quarters. Without the emergency liquidity injection wired from my personal trust at precisely 8:00 AM today, your boss would currently be filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy before we even cut the wedding cake.”
Alexander froze. His hand dropped from his collar. “What did you say?”
“You heard me,” Emma said, stepping closer until she was well within his personal space. She smelled of white roses and expensive champagne, but her eyes were shards of ice. “You thought this was a business marriage of convenience where you used my family name to bail out your failing tech investments while keeping your mistress tucked away in a corporate suite. But you forgot one golden rule of high finance, Alexander: He who holds the capital writes the rules.”
Her phone chimed with an incoming notification.
“As of twelve-twenty-two AM,” Emma whispered, looking directly into his widening eyes, “I have officially frozen all corporate credit lines associated with Carter Industries. Your company cards are declined. Your accounts are locked. And by nine o'clock tomorrow morning, the board of directors will receive an emergency motion for your immediate termination as CEO.”

The color drained entirely from Alexander’s face. “You wouldn’t.”
“Try me,” Emma said. She turned on her heel, her wedding dress whispering against the carpet. “Enjoy the rest of your evening in my hotel. You have twelve hours to pack your things before I have you thrown out into the September rain.”
