Chapter 14 - Blood and RelicsThe descent down the maintenance shaft was a nightmare of rusted iron ladders and dripping condensation. Every step echoed off the circular concrete walls like a drumbeat.

When we reached the third sub-level, the iron door ahead of us was ajar, a sickly yellow light spilling out onto the wet floorboards.
Marcus signaled with two fingers, kicking the door wide open with a deafening crash.
“Clear!” he roared, raising his rifle.
The room beyond was an enormous underground chamber that must have once served as a sorting hub for the city’s pneumatic mail system in the 1920s. Now, it was a high-tech server farm. Banks of cooling fans whined in unison, illuminating dozens of glowing monitors and tangled webs of fiber-optic cables.
Standing in the center of the room, illuminated by the cold blue glow of a massive central terminal, was a man with silver-streaked hair and an impeccably tailored grey trench coat that looked entirely out of place in the filth of the subway tunnels.
Julian Rossi turned slowly, a glass of amber whiskey in his hand. He didn't look terrified. He looked amused.
“Elias,” Julian said, his voice smooth, cultured, and dripping with arrogance. “And my dear, tragic cousin Ava. I wondered when you’d crawl out of your northern fortress.”
Elias didn't lower his weapon. The muzzle of his rifle remained locked dead on the center of Julian’s chest.
“You’re trespassing on my island, Julian,” Elias said, his voice like grinding stones.
“Your island?” Julian laughed, setting his whiskey glass down on a steel console with a sharp clink. “Elias, you’re nothing more than a peasant who learned how to wear an expensive suit. This city doesn't belong to you. It belongs to the Rossi bloodline. And these terminals... they’re already downloading the final keys.”
On the central screen, a progress bar ticked upward: 94%... 95%... 96%...
“You think a few gigabytes of encrypted data are going to save you?” Elias stepped forward, his boots ringing loudly on the concrete.
“It’s not just data, Elias,” Julian smiled, stepping back toward the shadow of a massive steel pillar. “It’s a dead-man’s switch. The moment that bar hits one hundred percent, every Swiss bank account, every offshore holding, and every real estate deed in your name is transferred to a numbered account in the Cayman Islands controlled by my associates. You’ll be a pauper by sunrise. And then... the underworld will tear you apart like wolves on a dying stag.”
I looked at the screen. 98%...
My finger tightened on the trigger of my Beretta.
“Elias...” I whispered.
Elias didn't blink. He raised his left hand, holding a small, matte-black override device.
“You forgot one thing, Julian,” Elias said softly.
Julian’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second. “What are you talking about?”
May you like
“I bought the telecommunications grid beneath this district three years ago,” Elias replied, a cold, predatory grin spreading across his face. “Every fiber-optic line in this terminal doesn't lead to the Swiss servers. It leads to a hard loop inside my private mainframe in Manhattan.”
Elias pressed the button.
