CHAPTER 1 — The Anniversary That Was Meant to Be My Funeral

People always say that betrayal comes without warning.
They're wrong.
It whispers long before it screams.
For months, I watched my husband slowly become someone I no longer recognized.
Daniel had once been the kind of man who brought me coffee every morning, kissed my forehead before work, and called me just to ask if I'd eaten lunch. But little by little, those moments disappeared.
Instead, he became distant.
He stayed out later than usual.
His phone was always face down.
When I entered a room, conversations suddenly ended.
He stopped saying "I love you."
At first I blamed stress.
Our company had grown faster than either of us expected. As the founder and majority shareholder, I spent most of my time traveling, negotiating contracts, and meeting investors.
Daniel often joked that he had become "Mr. Emily Carter."
I laughed every time.
Now I realize he wasn't joking.
He hated living in my shadow.
Then the questions started.
"If something happened to you..."
"Who owns the company?"
"Can someone challenge your will?"
"Does your life insurance pay immediately?"
Each question sounded casual.
Each answer made him smile a little too much.
One rainy afternoon, while searching for a charger in his office, I found a black folder inside the bottom drawer.
Inside were insurance documents.
My insurance.
Twenty million dollars.
The beneficiary...
Daniel Carter.
My hands trembled.
There were also maps.
Mountain trails.
Cliff locations.
A payment receipt made to a company with no official address.
And one handwritten note.
"After confirmation. No mistakes."
I felt the blood drain from my face.
That night I cried in the shower so he wouldn't hear me.
But I made a decision.
I wouldn't confront him.
I wanted to know how far he was willing to go.
A week later, Daniel surprised me.
"Our anniversary deserves something special."
He smiled exactly like the man I'd fallen in love with years before.
"We're going to Eagle's Peak."
The mountain was breathtaking.
Fog drifted through ancient pine trees.
Cold wind swept across the cliffs.
It looked like the perfect place for photographs.
Or murder.
Daniel wrapped his arm around me.
"You look beautiful."
He kissed my cheek.
For one impossible second...
I wanted to believe none of it was real.
Then his phone vibrated.
He glanced at it.
His smile disappeared.
"I'll be right back."
He walked behind a cluster of rocks.
Seconds later...
Three enormous men stepped out of the fog.
Black jackets.
Black gloves.
No hesitation.
I ran.
One caught my arm.
Another slammed me into the rocks.
The third wrapped both hands around my shoulders.
I screamed Daniel's name.
No answer.
Only footsteps walking away.
One thug leaned close enough for me to smell cigarette smoke.
"Your husband says hello."
Then...
They shoved me over the edge.
For one endless second...
The entire world disappeared.
The sky spun.
The mountain vanished.
I closed my eyes.
I thought...
This is how I die.
Then everything went black.
High above the cliff...
Daniel smiled.
He believed his wife—and twenty million dollars—were finally gone forever.
The killers climbed down to retrieve my body.
May you like
None of them imagined that something impossible was waiting beneath the rocks.
Something that would make hardened criminals beg for their lives.
