Chapter 4 - The Predator’s SmileValeria’s heart slammed against her ribs like a trapped animal, but a strange, icy clarity flooded her veins. The panic vanished, replaced by a lethal, razor-sharp survival instinct.

She didn't drop the documents. Instead, she slowly stood up from the floor, holding the manila envelope in one hand and the cracked burner phone in the other.

Alejandro stood in the doorway, framed by the harsh hallway light. He wasn't wearing his shirt; his chest was bare, displaying the lean, athletic build of a man who spent more time at private country clubs than corporate desks. But his eyes—those familiar, hazel eyes she had trusted for a decade—were completely dead.

“You’re a thorough researcher, Alejandro,” Valeria said, her voice terrifyingly steady. “I’ll give you that. Multi-million-peso policies, offshore shell corporations, and a convenient little partnership with my sister. Did you draft this before or after you kissed Sofía goodbye?”

Alejandro didn't flinch. He didn't drop his head in fake shame or scramble to invent an excuse. Instead, a slow, predatory smile crept across his lips, transforming his handsome face into something truly monstrous.

“You always underestimated yourself, Val,” Alejandro said, taking a slow, deliberate step into the room. The floorboards groaned beneath his weight. “You thought you were just a lucky girl who caught a successful corporate man. You never realized you were the final signature on an exit strategy.”

“Where is she?” Valeria demanded, her eyes darting toward the hallway. “Where is Mariana?”

“Right where she needs to be,” a cool, melodic voice answered from the doorway.

Mariana stepped out from the shadows behind Alejandro. She wasn't wearing her silk bathrobe anymore; she wore a dark tactical turtleneck and fitted black trousers. In her right hand, she held a sleek, silenced semi-automatic pistol, the steel barrel catching the pale street light with an ominous metallic glint.

The family resemblance, usually so comforting, now looked like a duplicate mold of pure evil.

“You really should have stayed in the kitchen and stirred your soup, little sister,” Mariana sighed, shaking her head with genuine disappointment. “You always had to poke your nose into things that didn't belong to you. Just like with Rodrigo.”

Valeria froze. The air left her lungs in a sharp rush.

“Rodrigo...” Valeria whispered, the horrifying puzzle pieces clicking together with sickening speed. “You didn't go missing on a business trip... You killed him, too.”

“Rodrigo was a liability,” Mariana said smoothly, raising the pistol just an inch higher, her grip rock-steady. “He found out about the Zapopan property development scam Alejandro and I were running through our family trust. Some men can’t handle ambition, Val. They get sentimental. They want ethics. But success requires casualties.”

“And Sofía?” Valeria’s voice broke, the maternal agony piercing through her icy composure. “She’s your niece! Your own flesh and blood! How could you agree to blow her up?”

Alejandro let out a soft, dismissive chuckle, stepping closer. “Collateral damage, sweetie. Children are resilient, until they aren't. Besides, insurance payouts double when multiple family members perish in a catastrophic residential gas anomaly. It’s basic mathematics.”

The sheer, sociopathic detachment in his voice snapped the final thread of Valeria’s restraint.

She didn't scream. She didn't beg.

With a sudden, explosive burst of movement, Valeria hurled the heavy manila envelope directly into Alejandro’s face, blinding him momentarily, and lunged sideways toward the bed where Sofía was waking up with a terrified gasp.

“Run, Sofía!” Valeria screamed at the top of her lungs, grabbing her daughter by the arm and dragging her toward the heavy French doors that led out onto the second-story balcony.

“Get them!” Mariana shouted, the calm facade shattering into a shrill, furious shriek.

A heavy thud echoed behind them as Alejandro lunged across the room, his hand catching the back of Valeria’s nightgown just as she shoved Sofía out onto the wet balcony tiles.
