CHAPTER 2: THE PERFECT MURDER FALLS APART

Mark laughed.
At first.
A loud, cruel laugh.
"You can't even lift your head."
"You expect me to believe you poisoned me?"
He reached for his coffee cup.
Then stopped.
His hand trembled.
Almost imperceptibly.
His smile cracked.
"What... did you..."
I watched the fear bloom behind his eyes.
Not because he was dying.
Because uncertainty terrified him more than death.
The coffee wasn't poisoned.
It didn't need to be.
Hours earlier my visiting nurse—one of the few people Mark allowed near me—had secretly replaced his imported espresso with an identical blend containing a harmless medication known to cause temporary numbness, dizziness, and rapid heartbeat.
Exactly the symptoms he'd watched me suffer for months.
Psychology finished what chemistry started.
His breathing accelerated.
His fingers curled.
"My arm..."
He stumbled backward.
"My arm is numb..."
He reached for his phone.
Dropped it.
Suddenly he believed his own poison had found its way back to him.
Panic destroyed everything months of planning had built.
He ran to the sink.
Vomited.
Knocked over cabinets.
Then he made the mistake every guilty criminal eventually makes.
He started talking.
Talking to himself.
Talking to me.
Talking to the empty room.
"I had no choice!"
"You were supposed to die weeks ago!"
"Claire said we'd already waited too long!"
"I deserved that money!"
Every word...
Recorded.
Every confession...
Saved.
Then he spotted the tiny blinking light hidden inside the music box.
His entire face drained of color.
"No..."
He ripped it open.
Found the camera.
Destroyed it with one violent stomp.
Then laughed again.
"There."
"No evidence."
I smiled.
"There never was just one."
The television across the room suddenly switched on by itself.
Every hidden camera.
Every confession.
Every recording.
Streaming live.
Not only to cloud storage...
But directly to three places.
My attorney.
The lead homicide detective.
And the State Attorney's digital evidence unit.
Mark stared at the screen as his own voice echoed through the bedroom.
"I poisoned every meal."
"I deserve the insurance money."
"I can't wait until she's dead."
He collapsed into the chair beside my bed.
Outside...
The sirens stopped.
Doors slammed.
Footsteps rushed toward the front entrance.
Mark whispered only one sentence.
"...what have you done?"
I finally answered.
"What I used to do for a living."
"I followed the evidence."
The front door exploded open.
But the first people through it...
Were not police officers.
And seeing them...
May you like
Made Mark scream.
