Chapter 1

“Maybe this will teach you to stop making me look like a fool in front of my family!” shouted Ricardo Salgado.

Before Mariana could step back, he grabbed her by the hair and shoved her face into the pink birthday cake made for Sofía, their four-year-old daughter.

All 47 guests froze in place in the garden of a rented house in Ciudad Satélite.

A few let out nervous laughs.

Others lowered their eyes.

Not a single person stepped forward to help.

Ofelia, Ricardo's mother, folded her arms with a satisfied smile.

“It's about time someone put this woman in her place.”

A few feet away, Fernanda—the so-called "family friend" Ricardo had been having an affair with for months—held up her phone and recorded everything while laughing.

Mariana slowly lifted her head.

Pink frosting clung to her eyelashes, her hair, and her lips.

Beside her, little Sofía cried as she stared at the fallen candles and the shattered sugar decorations.

Ricardo expected Mariana to scream.

He wanted her to make a scene so he could once again call her crazy, dramatic, and ungrateful, just as he always did whenever she tried to defend herself.

But she refused to give him that satisfaction.

She gently wiped a bit of frosting from her cheek with her fingertip and held it out to Sofía.

“It's sweet, sweetheart. Don't cry.”

“You didn't do anything wrong.”

Then she picked up her daughter, looked Ricardo straight in the eyes, and said with a calmness that sent a chill through the entire garden:

“Tonight... we're leaving.”

Ricardo burst into laughter.

“And where exactly are you going, Mariana?”

“You're just a waitress.”

“You don't have a house, a car, or a family.”

“Without me, you won't last a week.”

She didn't answer.

She walked into the house, closed the door behind her, and quietly began packing documents, children's clothes, medication, and a few personal belongings into two suitcases.

Outside...

The music started playing again.

Ofelia handed out the pieces of cake that were still intact as though nothing had happened.

Fernanda uploaded the video with the cruel caption:

“When the drama queen ruins her own daughter's birthday party.”

In less than two hours, thousands of people had already shared it.

No one noticed the man in the dark suit watching silently from a corner of the garden.

Santiago Del Valle, the owner of an investment firm in Santa Fe, had attended the party with one of his business partners.

From the moment he arrived, he had watched Mariana serve soft drinks, clear dirty plates, arrange chairs, and take care of every guest...

Without receiving a single thank you.

At first, he assumed she worked for the catering company.

Then he saw Sofía wrap her arms around Mariana's legs...

And realized she was the birthday girl's mother.

He also saw Ricardo put his arm around Fernanda's waist right in front of his wife.

Then he saw what happened with the cake.

A cold fury settled inside Santiago.

Not only toward Ricardo...

But toward the 47 adults who had chosen to remain silent.

He turned to his assistant standing near the gate.

“Tomás,” he said, “find out who that woman is.”

“Because of the video?” his assistant asked.

Santiago shook his head.

“No.”

“Because of the way she protected her daughter while everyone else humiliated her.”

That night...

Locked inside the bathroom...

Mariana washed the last traces of pink frosting from her face.

Then she reached beneath her blouse and pulled out a delicate silver chain.

Hanging from it was an old silver ring, engraved with the image of an orchid.

She closed her fingers around it and whispered:

“Mom... I think I finally understand why you left this to me.”

May you like

Outside...

Ricardo was still laughing...
