CHAPTER 1 – The Night He Locked Me Out

The rain fell so hard that night it sounded like thousands of tiny stones crashing against the roof.
Lightning split the dark sky, followed by a deafening clap of thunder that shook the quiet neighborhood.
Emma stood barefoot on the cold wooden porch, one trembling hand wrapped around her swollen pregnant belly while the other desperately pounded against the locked front door.
"Michael... please..."
Her voice was barely louder than the rain.
"I don't have my shoes... my phone is inside... please open the door."
Nothing.
Not even a footstep.
Only ten minutes earlier, Michael had looked into her tear-filled eyes without the slightest hint of guilt.
"You've become nothing but a burden," he had said coldly.
"You cry too much... you're always tired... and now this pregnancy gives you another excuse not to do anything."
Emma couldn't believe the man standing in front of her was the same man who had once promised to protect her forever.
Then came the sentence she would never forget.
"If you want to argue with me... spend the night outside."
The door slammed.
The deadbolt clicked.
And just like that...
His pregnant wife became homeless.
Emma slowly slid down against the door, hugging her stomach as cold rain soaked through every layer of clothing.
"I'm sorry, baby..."
she whispered to the little life growing inside her.
"I promise Mommy will protect you..."
Hours seemed to pass.
Her lips turned blue.
Her feet had gone numb.
She wondered if this was what complete hopelessness felt like.
Then...
Two bright headlights pierced through the storm.
A sleek black Rolls-Royce Phantom silently stopped in front of the house.
The driver rushed out first, opening a large umbrella.
Then an elegant elderly woman stepped out.
Tall.
Graceful.
Silver hair perfectly arranged despite the storm.
Eleanor Ashford.
Emma's grandmother.
The woman she hadn't seen in almost three years.
Eleanor froze the moment she saw her granddaughter sitting barefoot in the rain.
She didn't ask a single question.
She simply removed her own expensive cashmere coat and wrapped it around Emma's shaking shoulders.
"My sweet girl..."
Her voice cracked.
Emma burst into tears.
"I'm sorry, Grandma..."
Eleanor gently touched Emma's face.
"No."
"You have absolutely nothing to apologize for."
She slowly turned toward the house.
The warm lights still glowed through the curtains.
Someone inside laughed.
Michael.
Completely unaware of who had just arrived.
Eleanor's eyes became frighteningly calm.
She looked toward her driver.
"Call James."
"The legal team."
"The investigators."
"And the board."
"I want everyone in my office at eight tomorrow morning."
The driver nodded immediately.
No questions.
No hesitation.
Emma blinked through her tears.
"Grandma... what are you doing?"
Eleanor smiled gently.
"I'm making sure the father of my great-grandchild learns something about consequences."
Emma shook her head.
"He'll never change."
Eleanor quietly helped her into the car.
"Oh, darling..."
"I'm not trying to change him."
"I'm going to remove everything that made him believe he could treat people this way."
As the luxury car slowly disappeared into the rain...
Inside the house...
Michael poured himself another glass of whiskey.
He laughed while texting another woman.
He believed he had finally gotten rid of his "problem."
He had absolutely no idea...
May you like
That before the next sunset...
His entire life would begin falling apart.
