Chapter 1 - The Frozen Secret

The snow was suffocating.
Ethan Caldwell didn't care about his custom-tailored Italian suit or the million-dollar contract sitting in his discarded briefcase. All he saw was the tiny, shivering body of a six-year-old girl collapsing against his security gate.
"Hey! Stay with me!" Ethan gasped, his voice cracking as he scooped her up. Her skin was ice-cold. He rushed her inside his heated foyer, shouting for his housekeeper, Martha. "Bring dry blankets and hot tea, now!"
For three years, Ethan had been the ruthless, untouchable CEO of Caldwell Industries. He was a man of steel, logic, and cold efficiency. But holding this fragile child, something inside him shattered.
As Ella slowly opened her eyes under the warmth of the blankets, her pale lips trembled. "Sir... my mom didn't come home last night. She works at your factory. She said... she said you were nice."
"Your mom?" Ethan asked gently, kneeling beside her. "What's her name, sweetie?"
"Scarlett Morgan," Ella whispered, clutching a crumpled drawing from her backpack. It was a crayon picture of a mother and daughter holding hands under a big yellow sun. "She never leaves me. Never. But she went to the night shift, and the door never opened."
Ethan’s heart seized. Scarlett Morgan. He knew that name. She was one of the assembly-line workers in Factory Sector 4. But more than that, she was the woman who had confronted him in the hallway two weeks ago, desperately begging for safer working conditions and overtime pay to afford her daughter's medical bills. Ethan had referred her to his head of operations—his own wealthy fiancée, Victoria Sterling.
With a sinking feeling, Ethan pulled out his phone and dialed the factory’s shift manager.
"Sir?" the manager answered, his voice shaky. "We didn't expect you to call on Christmas Eve."
"I need a status report on Scarlett Morgan," Ethan commanded, his executive authority returning. "Did she sign out of her shift this morning?"
A heavy, suffocating silence stretched over the line.
"Manager! Answer me!" Ethan roared.
"Mr. Caldwell... we... we have a problem," the manager stammered, his voice dropping to a terrified whisper. "Scarlett Morgan's keycard logged her entry at 8:00 PM last night. But there is no record of her exiting. And, sir... all the security footage from Sector 4 between midnight and 4:00 AM has been permanently deleted."
Ethan’s blood ran cold. He looked at Ella, who was watching him with wide, trusting eyes.
Suddenly, his phone buzzed with an incoming text from Victoria. “Darling, the Christmas Gala starts in two hours. Don't be late. And stop worrying about the factory. Everything is under control.”
Ethan stared at the text. Under control.

Before he could reply, Ella stood up, her tiny hand reaching out to grab his coat. "Please, Mr. Ethan. We have to go find her. She's cold. I know she's cold."
Ethan made a choice that would change his life forever. He wrapped Ella in a thick wool coat, picked up his car keys, and walked out into the raging blizzard. He was going to find Scarlett Morgan, even if he had to tear his own factory down brick by brick. But he had no idea that the monster hiding in the shadows was much closer than he could ever imagine.
