Chapter 3 - The Trap is Sprung

"No... it can't be," Ethan whispered, his mind racing. Why would Victoria, a billionaire heiress, be at a manufacturing plant at one in the morning, leading a low-income assembly worker into a dark basement?
Suddenly, the lights in the security room flickered and died. Emergency red backup lights kicked in, casting a sinister, bloody glow over the room.
The heavy steel security door slammed shut, locking with a metallic clank.
"Marcus! Open this door!" Ethan yelled, slamming his fist against the reinforced glass.
Through the glass, Marcus appeared, his face pale with guilt. He held a radio in his hand. "I'm sorry, Mr. Caldwell. I really am. But Mrs. Sterling... she owns my mortgage. She said if I didn't help her clean up this mess, my family would be on the streets. You shouldn't have come looking for her."
"What did she do to Scarlett?!" Ethan roared, shielding Ella behind his back.
"Some things are better left buried," Marcus whispered, turning his back on them and walking away into the darkness.
"Mr. Ethan, I'm scared," Ella cried, wrapping her arms around his leg.
"I've got you, Ella. I promise, I won't let anything happen to you," Ethan vowed. He looked around the room. As a CEO who took safety seriously, he knew every inch of his factories. He located the manual release valve hidden behind the main server rack. With a heavy groan, he pulled the lever.
The hydraulic locks hissed, and the door creaked open.
But as they stepped out into the hallway, a heavy, chemical smell hit Ethan's nose. It was sulfur dioxide—a toxic byproduct used in the factory's cooling systems.
Someone had intentionally opened the chemical valves in the lower levels. The gas was rising.
"We don't have much time," Ethan said, tearing a piece of his shirt and wetting it with water from a nearby dispenser. He tied it over Ella’s nose and mouth. "Keep this on, sweetie. We have to go down."
May you like
"Down?" Ella whimpered. "Into the dark?"
"That’s where your mom is," Ethan said, his heart pounding. "And I am not leaving her behind."
