CHAPTER 2 — "THE LETTER THAT TURNED A FUNERAL INTO A MURDER INVESTIGATION"

For several long seconds, no one moved.
The silence inside the Montero mansion became almost unbearable.
Even the grandfather clock in the hallway seemed louder than usual as each tick echoed through the marble corridors.
Lucía stared at the cream-colored envelope in Alejandro Salinas's hands.
She immediately recognized Eduardo's handwriting.
He always wrote the letter "L" in her name with a tiny curve at the bottom.
Years earlier, he had joked that if she ever doubted a letter came from him, she should look for that little curve.
"It means every letter finds its way back to you," he had said with a smile.
Now that same handwriting felt like a heartbeat from beyond the grave.
Ricardo suddenly stepped forward.
"This is absurd."
He forced a laugh that sounded painfully unnatural.
"My brother died in a traffic accident. The police already closed the case."
Alejandro calmly locked eyes with him.
"Did I say otherwise, Dr. Montero?"
Ricardo hesitated.
"No..."
"Then why are you nervous?"
A heavy silence followed.
Mercedes quickly recovered.
"As Eduardo's mother, I'll take that letter."
She reached toward the envelope.
Alejandro pulled it away.
"I'm sorry."
"The instructions are very specific."
He opened a folder and removed a notarized document.
"It states that if Mr. Eduardo Montero died unexpectedly, this sealed letter must be delivered personally to his wife—and only to his wife."
Mercedes' elegant smile vanished.
"His wife?"
"That girl?"
Alejandro nodded politely.
"Legally, yes."
Mercedes's face darkened.
"She won't be his wife much longer."
Alejandro glanced toward Lucía.
"I believe she still is."
Ricardo folded his arms.
"My brother's estate belongs to blood relatives."
Alejandro looked directly into his eyes.
"That depends."
Those two simple words landed like thunder.
Lucía could barely breathe.
Everything had happened so quickly.
Just moments earlier she had been homeless.
Now an attorney was standing inside the mansion speaking as though Eduardo had planned for this very day.
Alejandro carefully handed her the envelope.
"Mrs. Montero..."
"He asked me to tell you something."
Lucía swallowed hard.
"What was it?"
Alejandro's usually calm voice softened.
"He said..."
"If this letter reaches Lucía, then I failed to protect her."
The room spun.
Lucía grabbed the edge of a nearby table before collapsing.
Failed to protect her?
Protect her from what?
Her trembling fingers slowly broke the wax seal.
Inside was a handwritten letter.
A small silver key fell onto the marble floor.
It spun in a slow circle before stopping.
No one spoke.
Lucía picked it up with shaking hands.
It looked like the key to a safety deposit box.
Folded beneath it were several pages written entirely by Eduardo.
Tears blurred her vision as she began reading aloud.
My dearest Lucía...
If you're reading this...
I'm already gone.
First...
I need you to know something.
I never stopped loving you.
Not for a single day.
Not during our happiest moments.
Not during the nights we cried after losing our baby.
Not during the arguments about my family.
Not even during the final morning I left home.
You were always my greatest blessing.
Lucía pressed the paper against her chest.
She couldn't stop crying.
Across the room, even one of the housemaids quietly wiped away tears.
Eduardo's words continued.
You probably believe I died because of bad weather.
That's what everyone will tell you.
I hope they're right.
But I no longer believe it myself.
Three weeks before the crash...
Someone tried to sabotage my car.
The mechanic insisted the brake line had been deliberately cut.
He warned me not to tell anyone until he gathered proof.
Two days later...
He disappeared.
The police reported him missing.
He was never found.
Lucía felt every hair on her arms stand up.
"What..."
she whispered.
"This can't be..."
Ricardo suddenly interrupted.
"Enough."
He reached toward the pages.
Alejandro stepped between them.
"You will not touch those documents."
"They're evidence."
Ricardo laughed bitterly.
"Evidence?"
"My brother was becoming paranoid."
Alejandro remained perfectly calm.
Lucía forced herself to continue.
If anything happens to me...
don't trust anyone inside this house.
Not even those you think love you.
Especially...
don't trust the person who benefits most from my death.
If I'm wrong...
burn this letter.
Forget every word.
But if I'm right...
the truth is hidden inside Safety Deposit Box 417.
Use the silver key.
Only open it with Attorney Alejandro Salinas present.
Everything you need is inside.
Bank records.
Voice recordings.
Medical reports.
And one video...
that explains why I started fearing my own family.
Mercedes gasped.
"No..."
Ricardo's face turned pale.
Lucía looked up.
For the first time since Eduardo's funeral...
she saw genuine terror in Ricardo's eyes.
Not grief.
Not anger.
Fear.
Raw fear.
Alejandro quietly asked,
"Would you like me to continue?"
Lucía nodded.
Her voice had disappeared.
There's one more thing.
Lucía...
If this letter reaches you...
there's something you never knew.
I discovered the truth about our baby.
The miscarriage...
wasn't caused by stress.
Someone switched your prescribed medication.
The laboratory confirmed it.
I was gathering evidence before telling you.
Because I wanted absolute proof.
I promised I'd protect you.
I'm so sorry I ran out of time.
The paper slipped from Lucía's hands.
Her knees buckled.
Alejandro caught her before she hit the floor.
She stared into nothing.
"Our baby..."
she whispered.
"Our baby..."
Mercedes backed away several steps.
Her breathing became shallow.
Ricardo's jaw tightened.
"This is ridiculous."
"My brother was mentally unstable."
Lucía slowly turned toward him.
"No."
"He was the strongest man I've ever known."
"You know that."
Ricardo looked away.
Alejandro bent down and picked up the remaining page.
"There is one final section."
Lucía nodded weakly.
He handed it to her.
Her hands trembled so violently she could barely hold it.
If you're reading this...
don't cry for me.
Fight.
Fight for our child.
Fight for yourself.
Fight for the truth.
And remember...
The person who smiles first after my funeral...
is the one who expected me to die.
I love you.
Forever.
— Eduardo
Silence consumed the mansion.
Nobody dared breathe.
Lucía slowly folded the letter.
Then she looked directly at Ricardo.
For the first time in three years...
there was no fear in her eyes.
Only determination.
"You wanted me gone."
"You wanted me to sign those papers."
"You were terrified I'd see this letter."
Ricardo forced another smile.
"You have no proof."
Lucía slowly raised the silver key.
"Maybe not yet."
"But whatever is inside Box 417..."
"...you were willing to destroy my life to keep it hidden."
Ricardo's phone suddenly vibrated inside his pocket.
He instinctively glanced at the screen.
Only for one second.
But Lucía noticed.
His face turned completely white.
Alejandro noticed it too.
"Bad news, Doctor?"
Ricardo quickly locked the phone.
"It's nothing."
Alejandro smiled.
"I don't think it is."
Across the room, one of the servants accidentally dropped a silver tray.
The loud crash startled everyone.
At that exact moment...
A black SUV stopped outside the mansion.
Then another.
And another.
Four vehicles.
All with government plates.
Several men in dark suits stepped out.
Each wearing badges around their necks.
One of them carried a sealed search warrant.
The lead investigator looked toward the mansion and spoke into his radio.
"Target confirmed."
"We're moving in."
Ricardo saw them through the window.
For the first time in his carefully controlled life...
he completely lost control.
He whispered only two words.
May you like
"They know..."
