CHAPTER 4 — "RICARDO OPENED THE SAFE… BUT WHAT HE FOUND INSIDE MADE HIM REALIZE EDUARDO HAD OUTSMARTED HIM FROM THE GRAVE"

The roar of Ricardo's black Mercedes echoed through the Montero estate as the security gates slammed open.

Within seconds, he disappeared onto the highway.

Inspector Gabriel Herrera immediately grabbed his radio.

"Suspect fleeing eastbound."

"Black Mercedes S-Class."

"Notify highway patrol."

"Do not lose him."

Three unmarked government vehicles sped out of the mansion.

Tires screamed against the pavement.

But Ricardo had already gained a two-minute lead.

Twenty Minutes Earlier...

The downtown district of Mexico City was just beginning another ordinary morning.

People hurried toward office buildings.

Street vendors sold coffee and sweet bread.

No one noticed the luxury sedan stopping in front of Banco Nacional's private vault entrance.

Ricardo stepped out wearing sunglasses and a baseball cap.

He checked his watch.

8:07 a.m.

Exactly as planned.

He walked directly to the private banking manager.

"I need access to Safety Deposit Box 417."

The employee smiled politely.

"Certainly, Dr. Montero."

"Your identification, please."

Ricardo handed over his passport.

The manager examined it carefully.

Then compared it with documents stored in the system.

Everything matched.

Within minutes...

A steel vault door slowly opened.

The manager escorted Ricardo into a quiet room containing hundreds of numbered deposit boxes.

He unlocked Box 417.

"Please call me if you require assistance."

The manager left.

Ricardo immediately pulled the drawer open.

His pulse raced.

For months...

He had dreamed about this moment.

Eduardo had hidden something.

Something dangerous enough to threaten everything Ricardo had built.

He expected stacks of documents.

Hard drives.

Financial records.

Perhaps even signed confessions.

Instead...

The box contained only three things.

A sealed brown envelope.

An old wristwatch.

And a cheap disposable cellphone.

Ricardo frowned.

"That's it?"

He opened the envelope.

Inside was a single handwritten note.

His confident smile slowly disappeared as he began reading.

Dear Ricardo...

If you're reading this...

You proved I was right.

I always wondered whether greed would make you careless.

Apparently...

It did.

The real evidence was never here.

This box existed for only one reason.

To find out whether you would try to steal it.

Congratulations.

You just answered my final question.

Eduardo.

Ricardo's breathing stopped.

"No..."

He turned the page over.

Nothing.

No documents.

No evidence.

Only that short message.

Then...

The disposable cellphone suddenly vibrated.

He stared at it in confusion.

No one knew it existed.

Slowly...

He answered.

"Hello?"

A calm male voice spoke.

"Good morning, Dr. Montero."

"This call is being recorded."

Ricardo's blood froze.

"Who is this?"

"You've just confirmed attempted evidence tampering."

"You illegally accessed a safety deposit box that was no longer registered in your name."

Ricardo looked around wildly.

Hidden cameras.

There had to be cameras.

"You set me up..."

he whispered.

The voice continued.

"Thank you for proving Mr. Eduardo Montero's final theory."

The line disconnected.

For several seconds...

Ricardo simply stood there.

Then rage exploded inside him.

He smashed the disposable phone against the concrete wall.

Plastic pieces scattered across the floor.

His breathing became frantic.

He had walked directly into Eduardo's trap.

Back at the Mansion

Alejandro finished explaining everything to Inspector Herrera.

"So Eduardo expected Ricardo would eventually try to steal the contents."

Herrera nodded slowly.

"He wasn't protecting evidence."

"He was identifying the guilty party."

Lucía stared at Eduardo's letter.

Even after death...

He had continued fighting for her.

"He knew..."

she whispered.

"He knew Ricardo couldn't resist."

Alejandro smiled sadly.

"Eduardo always said intelligence means nothing without patience."

"He spent nearly a year preparing for every possibility."

Lucía closed her eyes.

For the first time since the funeral...

She didn't remember Eduardo lying in a coffin.

She remembered him laughing.

Planning surprises.

Playing chess.

Always thinking five moves ahead.

The Chase

Ricardo sped through downtown traffic.

His hands shook violently.

Everything was collapsing.

The investigators.

The recordings.

The hidden camera.

Now the safety deposit box.

He reached for his phone.

Only one person could still help him.

His longtime financial advisor.

"Víctor."

A frightened voice answered.

"Ricardo..."

"Don't call me."

"What happened?"

"The authorities are here."

"They're searching every office."

"They froze the foundation's accounts."

Ricardo slammed the steering wheel.

"What about the offshore companies?"

Silence.

Then...

"They know about those too."

His stomach tightened.

"Who talked?"

"I don't know."

"But someone gave them everything."

The call ended.

For the first time in years...

Ricardo realized he was no longer controlling events.

Someone else had been planning this much longer than he had.

A Hidden Memory

Back inside the mansion, Lucía wandered into Eduardo's old study.

Everything remained untouched.

His medical books.

His reading glasses.

The coffee mug still sitting beside the window.

She gently ran her fingers across his desk.

Then noticed something unusual.

A tiny scratch beneath the bottom drawer.

She crouched.

Carefully reached underneath.

Click.

A hidden compartment opened.

Alejandro stared in surprise.

"I searched this desk."

"I never found that."

Inside lay an old leather notebook.

Its cover contained only three words.

If I'm Gone.

Lucía carefully opened it.

Every page contained handwritten dates.

Names.

Conversations.

Financial figures.

License plate numbers.

Medical records.

It wasn't a diary.

It was an investigation.

Eduardo had secretly documented everything for almost eleven months.

The final completed page read:

March 11

Ricardo met someone behind the old hospital.

Cash exchanged hands.

Vehicle license confirmed.

Need one final proof.

If anything happens to me...

Lucía is in danger.

Protect her first.

Don't arrest anyone until she's safe.

Lucía pressed the notebook against her chest.

Fresh tears filled her eyes.

"He wasn't trying to save himself..."

"He was trying to save me."

Alejandro quietly nodded.

"He knew the closer he came to the truth..."

"...the greater the danger to you."

Mercedes Begins to Break

Downstairs...

Mercedes sat alone in the empty dining room.

The investigators had removed dozens of boxes filled with documents.

Family portraits had been taken down for examination.

Her perfect home looked hollow.

For the first time...

She replayed the months before Eduardo died.

She remembered Ricardo insisting on handling the family's finances.

She remembered Eduardo begging her to review foundation accounts.

She remembered refusing.

"I trust your brother."

Those had been her exact words.

Suddenly...

A terrifying thought crossed her mind.

What if...

Eduardo had been telling the truth?

What if she had defended the wrong son?

Her hands began to tremble.

"No..."

she whispered.

"Ricardo would never..."

But even she no longer believed the sentence she was trying to finish.

The Unexpected Visitor

Late that afternoon...

Another vehicle stopped outside the mansion.

This time it wasn't government officials.

It was an old white taxi.

An elderly man stepped out carrying a worn leather doctor's bag.

The moment Alejandro saw him...

His eyes widened.

"I don't believe it..."

Lucía looked confused.

"Who is he?"

Alejandro answered quietly.

"Dr. Manuel Ortega."

"The mechanic's father."

Lucía frowned.

"The mechanic who disappeared?"

Alejandro nodded.

"Yes."

"The man who warned Eduardo that someone had tampered with his brakes."

The elderly man walked slowly toward them.

His face looked exhausted.

As if he hadn't slept in months.

He stopped in front of Lucía.

Reached into his doctor's bag.

And carefully removed a small sealed evidence envelope.

"I've been hiding this since the day my son disappeared."

His voice cracked.

"I was waiting until I found someone I could trust."

Lucía's heart pounded.

"What is it?"

The old man looked directly into her eyes.

"It's the original brake line from Eduardo's car."

He swallowed hard.

"My son photographed it before he vanished."

Then he whispered the words that changed everything.

"It wasn't an accident."

May you like

"It was murder."
