CHAPTER 3 — "THE RAID THAT EXPOSED THE FIRST LIE… BUT THE REAL TRAITOR WAS STILL INSIDE THE HOUSE"

The pounding on the front door shook the entire mansion.
BANG! BANG! BANG!
"Federal Prosecutor's Office!"
"Open the door immediately!"
The servants froze where they stood.
One maid instinctively dropped the tray she was carrying. Crystal glasses shattered across the marble floor, but nobody even looked down.
Every pair of eyes turned toward Ricardo.
For years, he had been the man who always had an answer.
Today, he looked like a man watching his world collapse.
Mercedes grabbed his arm.
"Ricardo..."
"What is this?"
His throat tightened.
"I... I don't know."
But Lucía saw it.
He was lying.
She had spent three years watching Eduardo read people with uncanny precision.
"Eyes never lie," Eduardo used to tell her.
"When someone fears the truth, they stop blinking."
Ricardo hadn't blinked in nearly ten seconds.
The front doors swung open.
Six investigators entered the mansion.
Dark suits.
Official badges.
Calm expressions.
They moved with practiced confidence.
Leading them was Inspector Gabriel Herrera, a man in his early fifties whose reputation for dismantling white-collar crime networks was legendary throughout Mexico.
He unfolded a document.
"Dr. Ricardo Montero?"
Ricardo forced a smile.
"Yes."
"We have a judicial warrant authorizing the seizure of financial records, electronic devices, and medical files belonging to Montero Cosmetic Institute."
Mercedes stepped forward immediately.
"This is outrageous!"
"My family has done nothing wrong!"
Inspector Herrera didn't even glance at her.
"We're here because new evidence was submitted this morning."
Ricardo's eyes darted toward Alejandro.
"You."
Alejandro calmly shook his head.
"It wasn't me."
That answer only made Ricardo more nervous.
If Alejandro hadn't contacted the authorities...
Who had?
Herrera signaled his team.
Within seconds, investigators spread throughout the mansion.
Two headed upstairs.
One photographed every room.
Another began cataloging expensive artwork.
A forensic accountant opened a laptop on the dining table.
The Montero mansion no longer felt like a palace.
It felt like a crime scene.
Mercedes turned toward Lucía with burning hatred.
"This is your fault!"
"You brought these people here!"
Lucía slowly wiped away the last traces of tears from her face.
"No."
"The truth did."
Those four words hit Mercedes harder than any insult ever could.
For the first time since Eduardo's death...
Lucía wasn't apologizing.
She wasn't begging.
She wasn't crying.
Something inside her had changed.
Inspector Herrera approached Alejandro.
"You must be Attorney Salinas."
Alejandro nodded.
"I assume you received Mr. Montero's package."
"I did."
Herrera lowered his voice.
"The anonymous evidence arrived at our office at exactly eight this morning."
Ricardo's head snapped toward them.
Anonymous?
What anonymous evidence?
Herrera continued.
"It contained copies of overseas bank transfers..."
"...insurance policies..."
"...vehicle maintenance reports..."
"...and an unsigned note requesting immediate action."
Ricardo's face drained of color.
Insurance policies?
Lucía noticed his hands.
They were trembling.
She had never seen Ricardo afraid of anything.
Until now.
The First Crack
One investigator hurried downstairs carrying a thick binder.
"Sir."
"We found this locked inside Dr. Montero's private office."
Ricardo immediately stepped forward.
"That's confidential medical information."
Herrera accepted the binder.
"No."
"It isn't."
He opened it.
Every page contained bank transactions.
Millions of pesos.
Wire transfers.
Shell companies.
Offshore accounts.
The final page caught everyone's attention.
A payment made just twelve days before Eduardo's fatal accident.
Recipient: VELÁSQUEZ AUTOMOTIVE SERVICES
Amount:
3,200,000 pesos.
Lucía frowned.
"Eduardo never repaired luxury cars there."
Alejandro's expression darkened.
"I know that company."
Herrera looked up.
"So do I."
"It shut down two weeks after Eduardo died."
Ricardo interrupted immediately.
"It was probably a business investment."
Herrera closed the binder.
"Interesting."
"Because Velásquez Automotive never repaired vehicles."
"It specialized in destroying evidence from staged traffic accidents."
Silence.
Absolute silence.
Mercedes stared at Ricardo.
"...Ricardo?"
He laughed.
"That's ridiculous."
"You honestly think I'd murder my own brother?"
Nobody answered.
A Voice From the Past
Another investigator entered carrying an old voice recorder sealed inside an evidence bag.
"We found this hidden behind books in Dr. Eduardo Montero's office."
Lucía's heartbeat accelerated.
Eduardo loved recording medical notes.
Could this be one of them?
Herrera pressed Play.
Static filled the room.
Then Eduardo's familiar voice emerged.
Clear.
Calm.
Alive.
Lucía nearly collapsed.
It was the first time she had heard her husband's voice since the funeral.
"If anyone is listening to this..."
"...it means I never had the chance to explain."
"My name is Eduardo Montero."
"I believe someone is trying to kill me."
The room froze.
Ricardo clenched both fists.
Mercedes whispered,
"No..."
Eduardo continued.
"I don't know who yet."
"But I know why."
"Someone has been stealing millions from our family's medical foundation."
"I discovered forged signatures."
"Fake surgeries."
"Insurance fraud."
"I confronted one person."
"And since then..."
"I've been followed every day."
The recording suddenly stopped.
Herrera frowned.
"It was cut."
Alejandro examined the recorder.
"No."
"The file was interrupted."
"There's more."
"But someone removed part of it."
Ricardo immediately relaxed.
"You see?"
"There's no accusation."
"No names."
"No evidence."
Herrera looked at him.
"Not yet."
Lucía Begins to Remember
As everyone argued, Lucía closed her eyes.
A forgotten memory suddenly surfaced.
Three weeks before Eduardo died...
She had awakened around two in the morning.
Eduardo wasn't beside her.
She found him downstairs in his office.
He had been hurriedly hiding folders inside his desk.
When she asked what was wrong...
He smiled.
Too quickly.
"It's nothing."
"I'm just organizing paperwork."
She believed him.
Now she realized...
He had been protecting her.
Tears rolled silently down her cheeks.
"I'm so sorry..."
she whispered.
"I should have asked more questions."
Alejandro gently placed a hand on her shoulder.
"You trusted your husband."
"He wanted it that way."
The Hidden Camera
Suddenly...
One of the forensic technicians shouted from upstairs.
"Inspector!"
"You need to see this!"
Everyone rushed toward Eduardo's former office.
Behind a large painting hanging above the fireplace...
They discovered a tiny hidden camera.
Still connected.
Still recording.
Herrera carefully removed the memory card.
His technician inserted it into a laptop.
Video files appeared.
Hundreds of them.
The timestamps covered nearly six months.
Mercedes looked confused.
"Eduardo installed cameras?"
Alejandro slowly nodded.
"He once told me..."
"...he no longer felt safe inside his own home."
Lucía covered her mouth.
Her husband had been secretly recording everything...
Inside his own family's mansion.
The technician clicked the newest file.
The screen flickered.
Everyone leaned forward.
The image showed Eduardo sitting at his desk.
Across from him...
Someone else.
Only their back was visible.
A man's voice filled the room.
Cold.
Threatening.
"If you don't sign those documents..."
"...you won't live to regret it."
Lucía's entire body shook.
She recognized that voice instantly.
She had heard it almost every day for three years.
Ricardo.
The video froze before the man's face became visible.
The file had been corrupted.
Herrera slowly looked toward Ricardo.
"You seem to be having a very bad week, Doctor."
Ricardo's breathing became uneven.
"I want my lawyer."
Herrera smiled slightly.
"That might be wise."
The Final Shock
Before anyone could speak again...
Alejandro's phone rang.
He answered.
Listened silently.
Then his expression changed completely.
He lowered the phone and turned toward Lucía.
"There has been another development."
"What happened?"
Alejandro swallowed.
"The bank just confirmed someone accessed Safety Deposit Box 417..."
"...less than one hour ago."
Lucía felt the blood drain from her face.
"What?"
"That's impossible."
"I have the key."
Alejandro nodded slowly.
"Exactly."
"Which means..."
He looked around the room.
"...someone had a second key."
At that exact moment...
Everyone instinctively turned toward Ricardo.
But he was gone.
The window in Eduardo's office was wide open.
The curtains swayed in the wind.
Outside...
The sound of a powerful engine roared through the estate.
Ricardo had escaped.
And whatever had been inside Box 417...
May you like
He was racing to destroy it before Lucía could uncover the truth.
