Chapter 2: The Groom Who Ran From His Own Past

Daniel didn’t make it past the service hallway.
Three security guards found him ripping off his boutonnière, trying to escape through the staff exit.
“Daniel!” Emily shouted.
He froze.
Behind her, the entire wedding party crowded the hallway, phones raised, guests whispering like hungry wolves.
The elderly woman stepped forward slowly.
Her name was Margaret.
And her voice was calm enough to be terrifying.
“Tell her the truth, Daniel.”
Daniel’s face twisted.
“She’s crazy.”
Margaret looked at Emily.
“Ask him why he changed his last name.”
Emily’s stomach sank.
Daniel Whitmore had always told her he came from an old-money family.
Private schools.
Luxury vacations.
Business connections.
But Margaret pulled out another document.
A birth certificate.
His real name was not Daniel Whitmore.
It was Daniel Mercer.
And Margaret was his mother.
Emily could barely breathe.
“You said your mother was dead.”
Daniel turned cold.
“She should be.”
The hallway went silent.
Margaret’s eyes filled with pain, but she didn’t cry.
Instead, she handed Emily one final envelope.
Inside was a bank statement.
A life insurance policy.
And a marriage contract Daniel had secretly prepared.
Emily read the papers once.
Then again.
Her hands began trembling.
If she married Daniel that night, he would gain legal access to her company shares.
And if anything happened to her after the wedding…
He would inherit everything.
Emily looked up slowly.
“You weren’t marrying me.”
Her voice cracked.
“You were hunting me.”
Daniel’s mask finally broke.
He laughed.
“You think anyone will believe this old woman over me?”
Then the ballroom doors opened.
Two police officers walked in.
Margaret smiled sadly.
“They already do.”
Daniel turned pale.
Margaret revealed the final twist:
She hadn’t come alone.
She had been working with a private investigator for six months.
And Emily’s father had hired him before he died…
because he never trusted Daniel.
At that moment, Emily realized the wedding hadn’t been interrupted.
It had been saved.
Daniel tried to run again.
But this time, the guests didn’t move out of his way.
The same people who had laughed at Margaret now stood blocking every exit.
As officers placed Daniel in handcuffs, Margaret whispered to Emily:
“Your father’s last wish was simple.”
“Don’t let him take my daughter too.”
Emily looked down at her white wedding dress.
Then at the ruined flowers.
Then at the man she almost married.
And for the first time that day…
she smiled.

It was the truth.
