Chapter 4: The Woman in the Grave Was Never Dead

Emily couldn't breathe.
The room spun around her.
She looked from the faded photograph...
...to Margaret's trembling face.
Then back to Detective Ryan.
"No..."
Emily whispered.
"That's impossible."
"My mother died when I was a baby."
Ryan slowly shook his head.
"No death certificate was ever issued."
Emily frowned.
"What?"
"Only a missing persons report."
Silence swallowed the room.
Everything Emily believed about her childhood suddenly felt like a lie.
Margaret slowly opened an old leather journal.
"I promised I'd never tell anyone."
"But your father is gone."
"And Daniel almost destroyed the last chance to uncover the truth."
She carefully turned to the first page.
Inside was a newspaper clipping dated twenty-eight years earlier.
YOUNG HEIRESS ELIZABETH CARTER VANISHES DAYS BEFORE HER DAUGHTER'S FIRST BIRTHDAY.
Emily stared at the article.
The smiling woman on the front page looked exactly like the woman in Ryan's photograph.
Exactly like...
...her.
"I remember that day," Margaret whispered.
"It was raining."
"Elizabeth called me crying."
"She said someone had discovered a secret worth killing for."
Emily's voice shook.
"What secret?"
Margaret looked directly into her eyes.
"I never found out."
"She only repeated one sentence."
"If anything happens to me..."
"...never trust the man wearing my father's ring."
Emily instinctively looked at the engagement ring Daniel had given her.
It wasn't Daniel's family ring.
It had belonged to her father.
Her entire body went cold.
Ryan reached into another evidence bag.
"We recovered this from Daniel's safe."
It was an old cassette tape.
The label simply read:
FOR EMILY — WHEN SHE IS READY.
No date.
No name.
Only those words.
Ryan placed it into an old tape recorder.
Everyone held their breath.
Static filled the room.
Then...
A woman's trembling voice.
"Emily..."
"If you're hearing this..."
"...I couldn't protect you."
Emily burst into tears.
It was her mother's voice.
Alive.
Real.
Not a memory.
Not a story.
The recording continued.
"Your father thinks I'm dead."
"I made sure he believed it."
"It's the only way to keep you alive."
Emily stared at the speaker.
"What..."
Margaret covered her mouth.
Ryan looked equally stunned.
The voice continued.
"There are powerful people behind this."
"They don't want our family fortune."
"They want what your grandfather hid."
Emily frowned.
"What did Grandfather hide?"
Then the tape suddenly stopped.
Click.
Silence.
Ryan pressed Play again.
Nothing.
The rest of the tape had been deliberately erased.
Emily collapsed into her chair.
"So my mother escaped..."
"...someone erased the evidence..."
"...Daniel somehow found this tape..."
"...and tried to marry me."
Ryan nodded slowly.
"Which means Daniel wasn't the mastermind."
"He was working for someone."
Before anyone could speak again—
Ryan's phone rang.
He answered.
His expression changed instantly.
"What?"
His face turned pale.
"When?"
He slowly lowered the phone.
Emily's heart pounded.
"What happened?"
Ryan looked directly at her.
"Daniel escaped police custody..."
He paused.
"...and before disappearing..."
May you like
"...he murdered the only witness who knew where your mother has been hiding for the last twenty-eight years."
To Be Continued...
