Chapter 3 - The Broken Illusion

The crowd parted as Sophia Bennett stepped forward.
She looked breathtaking in a cascading gown of ivory lace, diamond tennis bracelets sparkling against her wrists. But the moment her eyes locked onto mine, all the color drained from her face. The polite, radiant smile of a bride-to-be froze and shattered completely.
My father’s jovial expression faltered. “Sophia, my dear, come meet—”
“Elena?” Sophia whispered again, completely ignoring my father. She brushed past her fiancé, her heels clicking frantically against the marble floor, until she stood directly in front of me.
My mother stiffened. “Sophia, darling, don't mind her. She’s just… family. A bit unstable, always has been—”
Sophia turned slowly, her eyes wide with shock and absolute fury as she stared at my mother, then at Daniel, and finally back at my father.
“You call her unstable?” Sophia’s voice cut through the ballroom like a scalpel. The music seemed to fade into the background. Dozens of elite guests turned to look, sensing the sudden, violent shift in the room.
Daniel chuckled nervously, stepping forward to wrap a possessive, heavy arm around Sophia’s waist. “Babe, what are you doing? It’s just my sister. She’s… well, she works at a hospital, kind of a glorified helper. She’s probably overwhelmed by all this.”
Sophia violently shrugged Daniel’s arm off her waist, stumbling back as if his touch burned her.
“A glorified what?” Sophia’s voice trembled, not with sadness, but with incandescent rage. She turned to Daniel, her eyes blazing. “You told me your sister was an administrative assistant. You told me she worked a low-level desk job because she couldn't hack college!”
Daniel blinked, glancing nervously around at the crowd of staring elites. “I—well, I mean, she didn’t go to med school. She didn’t do anything important. You know how it is.”
“I know exactly how it is!” Sophia yelled, her voice echoing off the high vaulted ceilings of the country club. She pointed a trembling finger directly at my chest. “Do you all have any idea who is standing in front of you right now?”
My father’s face darkened, his jaw clenching. “Sophia, control yourself. This is an elite gathering, and you are making a scene over a nobody.”
“A nobody?!” Sophia laughed—a sharp, hysterical sound. She turned to face the entire room, lifting her voice so that every single wealthy investor, chief surgeon, and politician heard every word.
“This ‘nobody’ is Dr. Elena Vance. She is the Director of Acute Cardiac Care at Metro General. She is the lead clinical researcher who rewrote the entire post-op recovery protocol that saved hundreds of lives last year—including mine.”

Dead silence slammed into the room.
You could hear the ice cubes melting in my father’s crystal glass.
