Chapter 6 - The Ultimatum

Ryan stood up, his face twisted with shock and betrayal. He looked down at our father, his voice shaking. “Is that true? You stole my inheritance and then tried to blame Camille for not handing over her house?”

“I didn't steal it!” Dad barked defensively, though his voice lacked its usual booming authority. “It was family money! I managed the estate! I had a right to allocate it where it was needed most!”

“You didn't allocate it,” I said quietly, leaning against the back of an empty chair. “You weaponized it. You used me as a tool to cover your tracks, and when Ryan needed a place to live, you decided you could just shuffle us around like chess pieces on a board because neither of us ever dared to stand up to you.”

Ryan turned toward me, his expression a mix of anger and humiliation. “And you knew about this?”

“I found out twenty-four hours ago,” I said honestly. “Just like you did.”

Ryan looked back down at the legal brief on the table, then at our father. Without another word, he grabbed his jacket from the back of his chair, pulled open the heavy glass office door, and walked out into the hallway without looking back.

Mr. Henderson cleared his throat awkwardly, gathering the papers on his desk into a neat, square pile. “Well. It appears my firm will be withdrawing from this representation immediately. Any further communication regarding this matter should go through proper channels.”

I picked up my portfolio, gave my father one last long look, and walked out of the office.

I thought the worst was over. I thought the exposure of the truth would finally break the cycle of manipulation that had held our family together like rusted wire for decades.

I was wrong.

That evening, as I drove back to Apex along the highway, my phone buzzed with an emergency alert from my home security system.

Motion detected at Front Door. Motion detected at Back Patio.

I pressed the live camera feed on my phone screen.

My heart stopped.
