Chapter 2 - THE SMOKING GUNThe media storm hit my company like a Category 5 hurricane.

By 3:00 PM, a crowd of reporters, bloggers, and furious internet activists had gathered outside the entrance of Elysian Dining’s headquarters in downtown Chicago. News vans with satellite dishes blocked the street. Microphones were shoved into the faces of my staff as they tried to enter the building.

Inside my corner office, the mood was apocalyptic.

"We’ve lost seven major corporate contracts in the last four hours," my head of operations, Sarah, said, her voice shaking as she stared at her laptop. "The Mayor’s charity dinner? Cancelled. The Northwestern Law Gala? Suspended. Our online review pages are being bombed with tens of thousands of one-star ratings. Emma... if this keeps up for another forty-eight hours, the company will go bankrupt."

I stood at the window, watching the sea of news reporters below.

My family thought they had pinned me against the wall. They thought by destroying my public reputation, I would be forced to crawl back, unfreeze their accounts, pay off their debts, and beg for their forgiveness just to make the media go away.

They under-estimated how long I had been preparing for their betrayal.

"Where did the video originate from?" I asked softly, my voice completely devoid of panic.

Sarah typed frantically. "It was uploaded by an anonymous account on TikTok and Twitter simultaneously, but the digital watermark in the corner belongs to a high-end video editing software. It was professionally spliced."

"My cousin Tyler," I muttered, a cold smile forming on my lips. "He works as a freelance video editor. Vanessa must have paid him to edit the phone footage from last night before posting it."

Suddenly, the landline on my desk rang. I picked it up on speaker.

"Emma, darling," my mother’s voice rang out, sweet, fake, and dripping with poison. "Have you seen the news today? It’s so terrible what people are saying about you online."

"Cut the act, Eleanor," I said flatly. "You and Tyler leaked the fake video."

My mother let out a soft, malicious giggle through the receiver. "Fake video? Oh, sweetheart, nobody cares about what's real. They only care about what they see. You looked like a monster in that clip. And right now, the whole world hates you."

"What do you want?"

"We want what is rightfully ours," my mother’s tone instantly shifted into sharp, bitter greed. "You will unfreeze all our bank accounts immediately. You will transfer the deed of the Oak Brook house into your father’s name. You will buy Vanessa a new car to replace the one you had repossessed. And you will issue a public statement apologizing to us for 'misrepresenting' the family."

"And if I don't?"

"If you don't, Tyler has three more videos," she threatened, her voice leaking pure malice. "Spliced audio of you trash-talking your clients, edited footage of your kitchen staff looking 'unhygienic'... we will completely erase Elysian Dining from the face of the Earth. You’ll be ruined, Emma. You’ll be broke, just like you were ten years ago."

I closed my eyes for a fraction of a second. They really thought they had me.

"You have until 6:00 PM today to comply, Emma," my mother added smugly. "Otherwise, the next video goes live on local news."

Click. She hung up.

Sarah looked at me, her eyes wide with terror. "Emma... what are we going to do? Should we call a press conference? Should we offer a settlement?"

"No," I said, turning around slowly. "Settling with blackmailers only teaches them how to ask for more. They think they were the only ones holding a camera last night."

Sarah frowned. "What do you mean?"

"My father’s house is a high-security estate," I said, a dark gleam in my eyes. "Six months ago, when I paid off the delinquent mortgage to save them from foreclosure, I retrofitted the entire house with top-of-the-line cloud-integrated security cameras for insurance purposes. Every single room—including the dining hall—has 4K audio and video recording."

Sarah gasped. "You have the full, unedited footage of the dinner?!"

"Not just the dinner," I smiled, walking over to my safe hidden behind the painting on my wall. "I have the footage of Vanessa sneaking behind my chair. I have the footage of her shoving me to the floor. I have the crystal-clear audio of my mother laughing, my cousins filming, and Vanessa telling me to 'eat on the floor like a dog.'"

I pulled out a small, encrypted black flash drive.

"Is that the backup?" Sarah asked, her breath catching in her throat.

"This is the destruction of my family," I replied. "Targeting my business was their fatal mistake. They thought I was playing a game of emotional guilt. They forgot I run a legal corporation."

"What’s the plan?"

"Call Mark Higgins at Channel 5 News," I ordered. "Tell him the CEO of Elysian Dining is holding an exclusive, live press conference at 5:30 PM—thirty minutes before my mother’s deadline. Tell him to bring every major media outlet in the tri-state area."

"And what about the legal side?"

"Call Arthur Vance," I added, my voice cutting like a razor. "Tell him to prepare felony charges for criminal extortion, defamation, corporate sabotage, and elder fraud against my parents, my sister, and my cousin."

By 5:00 PM, the grand ballroom of the Drake Hotel was packed with over a hundred journalists, news crews, and live-streaming influencers. The atmosphere was tense. The entire city of Chicago was waiting to see if the disgraced CEO would issue a tearful apology or resign in shame.

At 5:28 PM, my family arrived at the back of the ballroom.

I saw them through the side curtain. Vanessa was wearing a brand-new white dress, looking smug and triumphant. My father was holding his head high, clearly expecting me to step up to the podium and announce the full restoration of their luxury lifestyle. My mother was wiping away fake tears for the news cameras.

They thought they had won. They thought they were about to collect their prize.

At 5:30 PM sharp, I stepped up to the podium.

The room erupted with blinding camera flashes and rapid-fire shouting from reporters: "Emma! Did you really refuse to feed your parents?!" "Emma! Are you resigning from Elysian Dining?!" "Is it true you threatened your family?!"

I stood calmly behind the microphone, waiting until the noise slowly died down. I looked out into the crowd, locking eyes with my mother and sister standing near the back doors.

"Thank you all for coming," I said into the microphone, my voice echoing clearly through the speaker system. "Over the past twelve hours, a video has circulated claiming that I mistreated my family on my father's birthday. The public has demanded an explanation."

Vanessa smirked from the back of the room, crossing her arms.

"I am not here to offer an apology," I continued smoothly. "I am here to offer the truth."

I pressed a remote control in my hand.

Behind me, the massive 200-inch projection screen flickered to life.

The entire ballroom went dead silent.

The crystal-clear 4K security footage from my father's dining room began to play. The high-definition audio filled the room, reverberating off the walls.

The media watched in horror as Vanessa walked up behind me, deliberately shoved me to the floor, and watched my body slam hard against the wood. They heard the loud, cruel laughter of my mother. They saw my father scoff and continue eating his lamb. They saw my cousins pulling out their phones to record my humiliation.

And then, the audio picked up Vanessa’s clear, sharp voice echoing across the screen: "Get off the table. Eat on the floor like a dog."

Gasps swept through the ballroom like an electric shock. Journalists turned around, pointing their cameras directly at my family standing near the exit.

My mother’s face drained of all color. Vanessa’s jaw dropped in absolute horror.

"As you can see," I spoke into the microphone, my voice steady as steel, "the video posted earlier was malicious, heavily edited, and part of a coordinated extortion attempt."

I hit the remote again. The screen changed to display official bank statements, property deeds, and financial records.

"Every bill in that house was paid by me," I announced. "The house itself belongs to my corporation. For ten years, I funded their lives out of love and obligation. Last night, when I refused to tolerate physical and emotional abuse any longer, my family attempted to destroy my business to force me into compliance."

I looked directly into the news cameras.

"As of thirty minutes ago, formal criminal complaints have been filed with the Cook County State's Attorney's Office for felony extortion, criminal defamation, and fraud. To my clients: Elysian Dining stands for integrity, excellence, and truth. To my family..."

I paused, looking directly at my trembling sister at the back of the room.

"...I will see you in court."

The room exploded into absolute chaos. Reporters sprinted toward my family, shoving microphones into their faces as they frantically tried to cover their faces and escape through the emergency exit.

I stepped away from the podium, leaving the media storm behind me.

I thought the truth had finally set me free.

I had no idea that my family was about to resort to something far more dangerous than words.
