Chapter 4 - THE TIPPING POINT"DON'T MOVE!"

Before Chad’s lighter could touch the petrol-soaked floor, the sudden, deafening roar of police sirens tore through the night sky outside.
Blinding red and blue lights flashed violently through the high glass windows of the warehouse. High-powered flashlights illuminated the smoke-filled room as six armed police officers slammed through the back loading doors, weapons raised.
"POLICE! DROP THE LIGHTER! DROP IT NOW!" an officer screamed.
Chad’s face turned white as snow. He froze, his hand shaking as he looked between the light, the gas pooling at his feet, and the laser sights dancing across his chest.
"I said DROP IT!" the officer bellowed.
Chad dropped the lighter onto the dry concrete away from the gas, kicking it aside before raising his hands into the air. His two hired accomplices immediately fell to their knees, weeping and putting their hands behind their heads.
Police officers tackled Chad to the ground, slamming his face into the concrete and clicking handcuffs onto his wrists.
I leaned back against the heavy steel doorframe, sliding down slightly as adrenaline drained from my body. My lungs gasped for clean air away from the sharp fumes of gas and bleach.
A tall detective stepped over the wreckage, kneeling down beside me. "Ms. Emma Vance? Are you alright?"
"I... I'm okay," I gasped, wiping cold sweat from my forehead. "How... how did you know they were here?"
The detective held up his radio. "We’ve had a surveillance detail on your family's associates since 4:00 PM today, right after your attorney filed formal extortion charges. We tracked this vehicle from your sister’s apartment straight to your facility."
I closed my eyes, letting out a long, trembling breath.
They tried to burn down my life. They were willing to commit arson, murder, and destruction just to punish me for standing up for myself.
An hour later, the fire department had secured the facility, neutralising the gas leaks and clearing the toxic fumes. Detective Miller stood next to my car as tow trucks hauled away the sabotage team's vehicle.
"This changes everything, Ms. Vance," Detective Miller said gravely, holding a clip board. "This isn't just a civil dispute or family drama anymore. This is attempted arson, commercial sabotage, and conspiracy. The men we arrested are already talking. Chad admitted on tape that your father, Richard Vance, paid them $20,000 in cash to destroy this warehouse."
My heart hardened. The final lingering trace of warmth or childhood nostalgia I had for the man who raised me dissolved into ash.
"Where is my father now?" I asked, my voice terrifyingly calm.
"Units are currently en route to the Oak Brook estate to execute a felony arrest warrant for Richard Vance and Vanessa Vance," Detective Miller replied. "They won't be able to post bail after this."
"May I come with you?" I asked.
The detective looked at me, seeing the absolute, unyielding coldness in my eyes. He nodded slowly. "Stay in your vehicle and remain behind the police perimeter."
Twenty minutes later, three marked police cruisers pulled up to the gated entry of the Oak Brook mansion.
The house was completely illuminated under the night sky. Through the massive front windows, I could see my family inside. They weren't packing their bags to vacate. They were sitting in the grand living room, drinking my expensive vintage champagne, laughing as if they were celebrating an imminent victory.
They thought the warehouse was currently burning to the ground. They thought I was ruined.
BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!
Officer Miller slammed his heavy flashlight against the front double doors. "POLICE DEPARTMENT! OPEN THE DOOR! WE HAVE A WARRANT FOR THE ARREST OF RICHARD AND VANESSA VANCE!"
The laughter inside stopped instantly.
Through the glass side panel, I watched my mother peek out. When she saw the armed officers and the flashing red lights, she shrieked in horror.
My father hurried to the door, opening it slightly, his face twisting into a mix of shock and defiance. "What is the meaning of this?! Do you know who I am?! I am Richard Vance! You cannot barge onto my private property—"
"Richard Vance, you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit arson, felony extortion, and corporate sabotage," Officer Miller stated sternly, pushing the door open and grabbing my father’s arm.
"WHAT?! NO! THIS IS A MISTAKE!" my father yelled, struggling against the officer's grip as he was forced to his knees on the marble foyer. "I DIDN'T DO ANYTHING! EMMA IS SETTING ME UP!"
Vanessa ran into the hallway, screaming at the top of her lungs. "GET YOUR HANDS OFF MY FATHER! YOU CAN'T DO THIS TO US!"
Another female officer stepped forward, grabbing Vanessa’s wrist and pulling her hands behind her back. Snap. The steel handcuffs locked around her wrists.
"Vanessa Vance, you are under arrest for conspiracy and filing a false police report."
My mother fell to her knees on the rug, weeping hysterically, pulling at her hair. "EMMA! EMMA, WHERE ARE YOU?! SAVE US! TELL THEM IT'S A MISTAKE!"
I stepped out of my Mercedes, walking slowly up the front stone steps. I stood in the open doorway, looking down at my father pinned to the floor and my sister weeping in handcuffs.
My father lifted his head, his eyes glaring at me with pure rage. "You... you dirty traitor! You called the cops on your own father?! I gave you life! You owe me everything!"
"I owed you respect," I said softly, looking down at him without a shred of emotion. "And I gave you ten years of my hard-earned wealth. But you chose to destroy my hard work because you couldn't control me anymore."
"Emma, please!" my mother sobbed, crawling toward my boots, her hands trembling. "He made a mistake! We were desperate! Don't let them take your father to prison! What will people say about our family?!"
"There is no family left, Eleanor," I said, looking down at her cold hands. "You killed it the moment you laughed while I was on the floor."
I turned to Officer Miller. "Take them away."
As the officers dragged my father and sister down the steps toward the waiting police cars, my father screamed obscenities at me, his voice echoing through the wealthy, quiet neighborhood.

I thought this was the end of the nightmare. I thought with my father and sister behind bars, the battle was finally won.
I had no idea that my father had one last, deadly secret hidden away—a secret that was about to blow my world wide open.
