Chapter 10 - Dawn Over ChicagoThe sun was climbing high into the autumn sky, casting a brilliant, golden glow over the Chicago skyline. The air was crisp, carrying the unmistakable scent of approaching winter and changing seasons.

Inside the penthouse, the piano was playing softly. Naomi was sitting on the bench with Rosie, guiding her small fingers across the ivory keys, teaching her the opening notes of a lullaby Isabella used to play.
Jack ran into the study where I was standing, holding a clumsy, hand-drawn picture of a dragon breathing blue fire.
"Dad! Look! I drew us fighting the bad guys!" he announced proudly, holding up the paper.
I knelt down, taking the drawing with both hands, examining the chaotic strokes of crayon and marker with absolute reverence.
"This is a masterpiece, captain," I said, looking up into my son's bright, fearless eyes. "We look invincible."
Jack grinned, throwing his arms around my neck and hugging me fiercely. "Can we get ice cream before the ballet recital?"
"Only if you finish your vegetables," a voice called out from the doorway as Naomi walked in with Rosie trailing behind her, both of them smiling.
I stood up, pulling my children close to my sides while Naomi leaned against my shoulder, the four of us standing together in the center of the room, bathed in the morning light.
For fifteen years, I had believed that power was measured by how many enemies feared your name. But looking down at my children, safe, laughing, and whole for the first time in their lives, I finally understood the true definition of an empire.
