Chapter 3 - THE AWAKENING IN THE STERILE LIGHT

“What… what are you doing here?” Vanessa gasped, her eyes finally focusing past the pain. She blinked through her tears, trying to sit up, but a fresh wave of nausea slammed her back onto the mattress. “Where’s Dr. Sterling? Where's the head of surgery? Call someone important!”
“I am the attending on duty tonight,” I replied smoothly, applying the gel to the probe and pressing it firmly against her lower abdomen. Vanessa let out a sharp, piercing shriek as the pressure hit the exact point of inflammation. “Hold still. If you move, the imaging is compromised, and we won’t know how fast we need to cut you open.”
My mother lunged forward, her hands hovering helplessly. “Elena! Elena, please! Your sister is suffering! How can you be so cold? She’s family!”
I didn’t look up from the screen. The grayscale image flickered, revealing a classic, swollen, fluid-filled appendix sitting right on the brink of rupture.
“Family,” I repeated the word slowly, letting it hang in the sterile air like a curse. I turned my head to look my mother dead in the eyes. “Funny. That’s the exact word you used five years ago when you threw my belongings into two cardboard boxes. Except back then, you spelled it disgrace.”
My father stepped forward, his face flushing a deep, mottled purple. The old, arrogant patriarch tried to claw his way back to the surface. “Elena! That is no way to speak to your mother! Drop this childish attitude right now and get a senior specialist in here! We demand—!”
“You demand nothing here, Harold,” a calm, deep voice interrupted from the doorway.
Daniel stepped into the bay, holding a stack of surgical consent forms. His presence was a wall of quiet, unshakable strength. He didn't look at my parents with anger; he looked at them the way a judge looks at petty thieves caught on camera.
“I am Daniel Cruz, charge coordinator for acute trauma,” Daniel said smoothly, flashing his ID badge. “And Dr. Vance is not only the finest diagnostic physician in this hospital, she is also the one holding the scalpel that is going to save your daughter’s life. You can either stay quiet, sit in the corner, or be escorted out by security for interfering with emergency medical care. Choose.”
My father swallowed hard, his chest heaving. He looked at Daniel, then at the cold, unyielding wall of my expression, and finally realized the terrifying truth: the power dynamic had completely inverted. They were no longer the bank account holders; they were beggars in my kingdom.
“Is… is it ruptured?” Vanessa whimpered, clutching her stomach, the panic finally breaking through her narcissism. “Am I going to die?”
“Your appendix is about to burst into your peritoneal cavity,” I said, tapping the screen with the end of the pen. “Which means we have about twenty minutes before you go into septic shock. Sign the consent form for emergency laparoscopic appendectomy, or lie here and let your pride finish the job. Your choice, golden child.”

Vanessa stared at me, her face twisting in horror as she realized she had no script for this, no audience to perform for, and no escape. With a trembling hand, she grabbed the stylus Daniel offered and scrawled her signature across the digital pad.
“Prep OR 4,” I told Daniel, pulling off my gloves and dropping them into the biohazard bin. I walked past my parents without slowing down. Over my shoulder, I dropped the final blow. “Don't worry, Mom. I wash my hands before I cut. Unlike some people.”
