Chapter 1 - THE HOUSE WE GAVE HIM

I drove seven hours to surprise my son on New Year’s weekend.

Instead, I found my sixty-six-year-old wife on her knees, scrubbing his kitchen floor.

Gianna’s hands were red and cracked from bleach. A dirty bucket sat beside her, and she wore an old apron I had never seen before.

“Get your things,” I told her. “We’re going home.”

Our son, Austin, stepped between us.

“We don’t accept unannounced visitors here.”

“This is your mother.”

“She offered to help.”

Gianna lowered her eyes.

Then Austin’s wife, Peyton, appeared holding a handwritten chore list.

Bathrooms. Laundry. Dinner for twelve guests. Patio. Serving drinks.

My wife’s name was written beside every task.

I tried to enter, but Austin blocked the doorway.

“This is my house.”

It was the house Gianna and I had purchased for him when he married.

We paid the down payment, cleared the mortgage, and placed the property in his name because he was our only child.

Now he looked at the woman who raised him and said:

“She owes us for everything we spend on her.”

Gianna began crying.

Austin slammed the door in my face.

From inside, I heard him shout:

“Who told you to stop working? Get back to cleaning!”

I did not argue.

I returned to my hotel and opened the fireproof case I carried from Detroit.

Inside was the original property deed.

A yellow tab marked a paragraph our attorney had insisted on adding fifteen years earlier.

I read it twice.

Then I called him.

After hearing what Austin had done, he said:

“Joshua, your son never truly owned the right to control that house.”
