Chapter 5 - THE FORENSIC AUDITWithin two hours, the house was swarming with forensic accountants, investigators, and property appraisers. The "bridal shower" guests who began arriving at noon were turned away at the gated driveway by sheriff deputies, their luxury cars forced to reverse down the long suburban lane amidst flashing cruiser lights.

Peyton had locked herself in the master bedroom, screaming profanities and throwing designer shoes against the door, while Austin sat handcuffed to a metal folding chair in the formal dining room. The local authorities hadn't arrested him for the property dispute—not yet—but rather for wire fraud, embezzlement of medical trust funds, and extortion.

I sat across the mahogany dining table from him, watching as lead investigator Marcus Vance—Thomas’s nephew—dumped a stack of printed bank statements, shell company registries, and offshore wire receipts onto the wood.

"It’s an impressive paper trail, Mr. Miller," Marcus said, looking at me. "Your son didn't just drain your retirement and your niece’s medical fund. He set up fake shell corporations in the Cayman Islands using your identity, forged your signatures on power-of-attorney documents, and leveraged this very house three separate times to secure high-interest bridging loans from predatory lenders."

Austin glared at the floor, sweat beading on his forehead, his silk bathrobe looking increasingly pathetic against the harsh reality of handcuffs.

"I was going to pay it back," Austin muttered, his voice shaking. "The real estate market in downtown Detroit was supposed to skyrocket! It wasn't my fault the city rezoning fell through!"

"It’s always someone else's fault, isn't it?" I asked quietly.

I slid a single piece of paper across the table toward him. It was a certified medical statement from the regional hospital where our niece, Lily, was undergoing dialysis.

"Because of your greed, Lily’s treatment was downgraded last month," I continued, my voice dropping an octave. "Because of your selfishness, she went into septic shock three days ago. She is currently in the ICU, Austin. Fighting for her life. And you were worried about matching linens for a bridal shower."

Austin flinched, finally looking up. For a split second, a crack of genuine human panic showed in his eyes. Not remorse—fear. Fear for himself.

"Dad... you have to help me," Austin whimpered, sliding forward in his chair. "If these charges stick, I’ll face federal prison time. Peyton’s family will abandon me. Please. Use the rest of your assets to settle the debt with the bank. We can fix this!"

"There is nothing left to fix," Thomas Vance said, walking into the dining room with a final, thick bundle of legal documents. "Joshua and Gianna have executed the reversionary clause. The title has officially reverted to their names as of 11:15 AM. Furthermore, every single asset Austin purchased using diverted trust funds—including his luxury sports car, his investment accounts, and personal jewelry—has been slapped with an emergency asset-freezing injunction."

Thomas laid a final document down in front of Austin.

"As for the house," Thomas added with a thin smile, "you have exactly forty-two hours to pack your personal belongings into trash bags and vacate the premises. After that, the locks change permanently."

Austin stared at the paper, his mouth opening and closing like a stranded fish. The illusion of his invincibility had shattered into a million jagged pieces, leaving behind a terrified, small-minded boy who had traded his family for a mortgage-free facade.
